Conditioning Flowers When They First Arrive: Trimming, Stripping and Hydrating

Most flowers that die early do not die because of bad genetics or a rough delivery — they die in the first hour after they arrive, while someone is looking for a vase. That first hour is the whole game. Flowers travel in a cooled box, stems sealed and slightly dehydrated, and the moment you open the packaging the clock starts. What you do in the next sixty minutes — how you cut, what you strip, how cold the water is and how long you let the stems drink before arranging — determines whether the bouquet lasts five days or twelve. This routine is what we walk every customer through when they call us asking why their roses dropped after three days.

Unpacking Without Damaging: The First Two Minutes

Open the packaging carefully and lay the bouquet flat on a clean surface rather than standing it upright immediately. Flowers delivered in a box have been horizontal for part of the journey, and stems that have been sealed in sleeve packaging are often pressed together — pulling them apart quickly snaps small lateral buds and bruises petals on varieties like lisianthus and ranunculus, which are both softer than they look. Take thirty seconds to read what is in the bouquet before you touch anything. Roses have thorns that catch on wrapping; peonies in bud form have papery outer petals that tear if you pull the sleeve upward rather than sliding it down. Tulips are the most forgiving at this stage — their stems are flexible — but even tulips should not be yanked free. Remove any rubber bands around the stems before you do anything else. Rubber bands left on for more than a few hours create a pressure point that blocks water uptake at exactly the spot where you need flow to be unobstructed. If the bouquet came with a water sachet attached to the stems, leave it on until you are ready to cut — that sachet is still feeding the flowers. Check the stems for any that are already soft or discoloured at the base; a single rotting stem left in the vase will contaminate the water and shorten the life of every other flower around it.

The Right Cut: Angle, Tool and How Much to Remove

The single most important mechanical step is the cut, and it is done wrong more often than any other part of this process. Use a sharp knife rather than scissors wherever possible. Scissors compress the stem tissue as they close, partially crushing the vascular bundle that carries water upward — a knife slices cleanly and leaves the channel open. If you only have scissors, use the sharpest pair available and avoid craft or kitchen scissors with thick blades. Cut at a 45-degree angle, not straight across. The angled surface is larger than a flat cut, which increases the area through which water can enter, and it also prevents the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase and sealing itself off. Cut at least two centimetres from the base — three is better if the stem is long. Flowers that have been out of water for any period develop a dry plug of air and oxidised tissue at the very tip of the stem, and no amount of soaking will push water past that plug. You are removing it entirely. Do this cut under running water or, better, submerge the stem ends in a bowl of water while you cut. Air rushes into an open stem the moment it is exposed; cutting underwater prevents that. For woody-stemmed flowers — think chrysanthemums or certain spray varieties — make a second vertical split of about one centimetre up the centre of the stem after the angled cut. This dramatically increases the surface area for water absorption and makes a measurable difference in how quickly the flower rehydrates.

Stripping Leaves: What Comes Off and Why It Matters

Any leaf that will sit below the waterline in your vase must come off before the stems go in. This is non-negotiable. Submerged leaves decompose within twenty-four hours, releasing bacteria into the water at a rate that clouds the water and attacks the cut ends of every stem in the vase. The effect is fast and visible — water turns green or grey, stems go soft at the base, and flowers that should have lasted a week drop by day three. Strip leaves by sliding your fingers downward along the stem, or snap them off at the node. Do not use scissors for leaf removal on roses — the cut stub left behind is a point of bacterial entry. On roses specifically, also remove any guard petals that are bruised or translucent. Guard petals are the outermost two or three petals that protect the bud during growing and transport; they are often slightly damaged and contribute nothing to the final look of the flower. Removing them also allows the bud to open more evenly. For lilies, remove the stamens — the pollen-bearing structures at the centre of each open flower — as soon as the bloom opens. Lily pollen stains fabric and surfaces permanently, and the removal does not shorten the flower's life. For alstroemeria, strip the lower leaves completely; alstroemeria foliage deteriorates faster than the flowers themselves and is the primary source of bacterial contamination in mixed bouquets. Eucalyptus and other foliage stems should have their lower leaves removed on the same principle, even though they are hardier than flower stems.

Water Temperature and Vase Conditions That Actually Affect Longevity

Room-temperature water — around 18 to 20 degrees Celsius — is correct for most cut flowers. Cold water from the tap, especially in winter when tap water in many Russian cities comes out close to 5 or 6 degrees, slows water uptake significantly because it increases the viscosity of the water and constricts the stem tissue. Warm water, above 25 degrees, encourages bacterial growth from the first fill. The exception to the room-temperature rule is tulips: tulips respond well to cool water, around 10 to 12 degrees, because it slows their natural tendency to grow and curve toward light, keeping the arrangement tighter for longer. Hyacinths also prefer cooler water. Fill the vase to roughly two-thirds of the stem length — not to the brim. A vase that is too full means more submerged stem surface, more bacterial surface area, and more frequent water changes needed. Use a clean vase; residue from a previous bouquet contains bacteria that will immediately colonise the new water. Rinse with a small amount of bleach solution and wash with dish soap before use. If your tap water is heavily chlorinated, let it sit for twenty minutes before adding flowers — chlorine dissipates quickly at room temperature and at high concentrations it can irritate sensitive stem tissue. Add the flower food sachet that came with the delivery if one was included. These sachets contain a biocide, a sugar source and a mild acidifier — all three have a documented effect on vase life. Do not substitute sugar alone; without the biocide, added sugar accelerates bacterial growth.

The Conditioning Drink: How Long Before You Arrange

After cutting and stripping, the flowers need time to drink before you arrange them or move them to a display location. This step is called conditioning, and it is the one most often skipped because people want to put the bouquet in the vase immediately. Give the stems at least one hour in a deep container of room-temperature water in a cool, dim location — away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and fruit bowls. Fruit, particularly apples and bananas, releases ethylene gas as it ripens, and ethylene accelerates petal drop and bud closure in flowers. Roses are especially sensitive to ethylene. One hour is the minimum; two hours is better for flowers that arrived looking slightly tired or that travelled more than a few hours. During this conditioning period, the stem tissue rehydrates and the cells in the petals and leaves regain turgor — the internal pressure that makes petals look crisp and full rather than slightly papery. You will often see a visible difference after an hour: buds that arrived slightly soft will feel firmer, and any petals that looked a little flat will have lifted. Carnations and chrysanthemums condition particularly well and can look almost fully refreshed after two hours. Roses sometimes need longer if they arrived in tight bud. Gerbera daisies are the exception — they do not benefit from extended conditioning and should go into their final vase relatively quickly, as their hollow stems are prone to bending if left in deep water for too long. Lay gerberas at a slight angle in a shallow container rather than standing them fully upright during the conditioning phase.

Day-One Placement and What to Check Before You Walk Away

Placement of the finished vase matters more than most people expect, and the mistakes here undo everything you did in the first hour. Keep the vase away from south-facing windowsills in summer — direct midday sun raises the temperature around the flowers by several degrees and causes petals to desiccate faster than the stems can replace moisture. A bright spot with indirect light is ideal. Avoid placing flowers near radiators, underfloor heating vents, or air conditioning units; moving air, whether hot or cold, accelerates transpiration and shortens vase life. Before you walk away from the vase on day one, check three things. First, confirm that no leaves are submerged — even one leaf missed in the stripping step will start decomposing within hours. Second, check that all stems are actually reaching the water and that no stem is resting on the vase rim above the waterline. In a tightly arranged bouquet this happens more than you would think, particularly with shorter stems tucked into the centre. Third, check that the vase is stable — a heavy-headed bouquet with tall roses or sunflowers has a high centre of gravity and a narrow vase will tip. After day one, change the water every two days, recut the stems by one centimetre each time, and remove any flower that begins to show signs of decay immediately. A single decaying stem produces enough bacterial load to shorten the life of healthy flowers around it by a full day or more.

The routine described here takes about fifteen minutes the first time and closer to eight once you have done it a few times. It is not complicated, but it is sequential — each step depends on the previous one being done correctly. A clean cut into contaminated water achieves nothing; perfectly stripped stems in a dirty vase achieve nothing. Done in order, in the first hour after delivery, this routine reliably adds three to five days to the life of a fresh bouquet. Frequently asked questions

Does it matter if I cut the stems in air rather than underwater?

It makes a real difference for roses and lilies. Air enters the stem the instant it is cut, forming a small blockage in the vascular tissue. Cutting under running water or in a bowl prevents this. For hardier stems like chrysanthemums and carnations the effect is less pronounced, but cutting underwater is a good habit to build regardless of variety.

Can I skip the conditioning hour and put flowers straight into the display vase?

You can, but vase life will be shorter. Flowers that go directly into a display position without a conditioning drink — especially those placed in a warm or bright room — are drawing on reserves they have not yet replenished. The conditioning hour allows cells to rehydrate fully before the flower faces any environmental stress. It is worth the wait.

My roses arrived with bent necks. Is there anything I can do?

Yes. Recut the stems at an angle, wrap the entire bouquet tightly in paper so the heads are supported upright, and stand the wrapped bouquet in deep room-temperature water for two to four hours. The neck bend is caused by an air block or dehydration, and firm hydration under support often corrects it. Roses that have been bent for more than twelve hours are harder to recover.

Is tap water fine, or should I use filtered or bottled water?

Tap water works well in most Russian cities. If your local water is heavily chlorinated, let it sit in an open container for fifteen to twenty minutes before adding flowers — chlorine dissipates at room temperature. Bottled still water offers no meaningful advantage over settled tap water. Avoid sparkling water; the carbonation does not help and the acidity is inconsistent.

How often should I change the water after the first day?

Every two days is the standard. Each time you change the water, rinse the vase, recut the stems by at least one centimetre, and check for any leaves that have slipped below the waterline. In warm rooms above 22 degrees, daily water changes are worth doing. The goal is to keep bacterial levels low — cloudy water is a sign the interval between changes is too long.
