Sending Cut Orchids by Post: What Works, What Fails, What to Do Instead

Cut orchids can go by post for a short domestic journey of one to two days: their waxy petals hold water far better than roses or tulips, and with each stem sealed in a water tube and the box kept above about 12 °C, cymbidium and dendrobium usually arrive fresh. A long international transit, cold depots and rough handling are what ruin them, so posting orchids across borders is rarely worth the risk.

At Pyat Tsvetov we have run our own flower shops in Saint Petersburg since 2011, and customers from abroad ask us this regularly: they want to surprise a mother or a friend in Russia and wonder whether to post orchids or order them here. This article sets out what we tell them at the counter: how orchids react to a parcel, how a florist would pack them, how the recipient should look after the stems, and how to arrange orchids to arrive by courier instead.

What we tell customers who want to post orchids

The first thing we explain is that a parcel is a dark, closed box with no water supply and an unknown temperature. A cut flower inside it keeps breathing and slowly spends its water reserve. Orchids are among the few flowers that cope with this for a day or two, because their thick petals evaporate little and they react weakly to ethylene, the ageing gas released by fruit and other flowers.

The second point is that not all orchids are equal. Cymbidium, with its large firm blooms on a strong spike, is the best traveller. Dendrobium sprays are light and resilient. Phalaenopsis petals are wide and soft and mark easily when pressed, while vanda and oncidium are best not posted at all. If a customer insists on posting, we always recommend cymbidium.

The third point is timing. A domestic next-day service is realistic; anything beyond three days is not. International parcels often take a week or longer, may be held for inspection, and many postal operators restrict live plant material, so for gifts abroad we suggest ordering in the recipient's own city.

How a florist packs orchid stems for a journey

Each stem is cut at an angle with a sharp knife, ideally under water so no air bubble blocks the vessels. The end goes straight into a plastic florist tube filled with clean, room-temperature water and closed with a rubber cap. This tube is what keeps the flower alive for the next 48 hours, so it must be snug and not leak.

The flowers are then wrapped in soft tissue or a cellophane sleeve that does not touch the petals too tightly. The stems lie in a rigid box with the tubes at one end, fixed with a strip of tape or paper padding so they cannot slide. There should be a few centimetres of air above the blooms, because a lid pressing on an orchid leaves brown bruises within hours.

In autumn and winter the box needs insulation. Orchids are tropical plants: below roughly 10-12 °C the petals start to suffer, and frost causes dark, glassy patches that never recover. A thermal liner or several layers of thick paper, a "Fragile" label and dispatch early in the week so the parcel does not wait over a weekend all make a real difference.

Inside the box, the stems should not share space with anything that gives off ethylene or moisture: no fruit, no chocolates, no other flowers that are already opening. Damp tissue pressed against the petals is another common mistake, because wet orchid petals in a closed box develop brown spots. Keep the water in the tubes and the blooms themselves dry, and the flowers will arrive looking as if they were cut that morning.

Care for orchids after a parcel or a delivery

The box should be opened as soon as it arrives, not left in a cold entrance hall. Take the stems out, remove the tubes and recut each stem by 1-2 cm. Orchids prefer lukewarm water of about 20-25 °C rather than cold water from the tap, and a clean vase matters more than any additive.

Russian flats in the heating season are warm and dry, which shortens the life of any bouquet. Keep orchids away from radiators, direct sun and the fruit bowl, and change the water every two to three days with a fresh cut each time. Our guide on keeping cut flowers fresh in a warm Russian apartment has more practical tips for winter.

Two habits from potted orchids should not be carried over to cut stems. Misting the blooms leaves water marks and invites spotting, and putting the vase on a cold windowsill at night chills the flowers more than people expect. A stable room away from draughts is the best place for the whole vase life.

If a bloom looks slightly tired after a journey, a 20-minute float in a bowl of lukewarm water often revives it. Petals that have turned translucent or brown at the edges will not recover; remove those flowers one by one and the rest of the spike will keep its shape. With this care, a cut cymbidium can stay decorative for three weeks or more.

Choosing orchids as a gift: colour, occasion, etiquette

In our shops orchids are most often chosen for mothers, for anniversaries and for people who are hard to surprise. They read as a thoughtful, elegant gift rather than an everyday bouquet. White orchids suit almost any occasion, from a birthday to congratulations on a new home; pink and lilac feel tender and romantic; burgundy, green and yellow cymbidiums look bold and are a good choice for men or a business gift.

Customers from abroad often ask whether orchids are appropriate in Russia. They are: there are no negative associations, and the only rule worth keeping in mind for mixed bouquets is the odd number of stems for happy occasions, since even numbers are linked with funerals. For a spray where one spike carries many blooms, this rule is applied loosely.

Another frequent question is whether to send a potted plant or cut stems. A potted phalaenopsis keeps flowering for months but needs some care from the recipient, while cut stems are a ready decoration that asks for nothing but fresh water. We compare both options in Orchids in Russia: potted vs cut.

How to have orchids delivered in Russia instead of posting them

For a recipient in Russia there is no need to post anything. We deliver across Russia, and in large cities express delivery takes 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed. You can also choose an exact time with a margin of about 30 minutes, a window of 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21, or pre-order 1-30 days ahead so the flowers arrive on the right day. In Saint Petersburg delivery is around the clock.

Delivery within the city costs 500 RUB; for suburbs and remote districts the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. Payment is online on the site by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay, and foreign bank cards are accepted through Robokassa, which matters for customers paying from abroad. Details are on the delivery and payment page.

Delivery is anonymous by default, and a card with your text is free. The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival; if nobody is home, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with your consent, leave the flowers with a neighbour or concierge. Choose a bouquet in the catalogue, and for any questions call us on 8 (812) 507-67-05.

Frequently asked questions

Can cut orchids survive being posted?

Yes, for a short domestic journey of one to two days, if each stem is in a water tube and the box stays above about 12 °C. Longer international transit often damages them.

Which orchid travels best in a box?

Cymbidium is the most robust thanks to its firm, waxy blooms on a strong spike. Dendrobium is a good lighter option, while phalaenopsis bruises more easily.

What water temperature do cut orchids prefer?

Lukewarm water of about 20-25 °C. Change it every two to three days and recut the stems each time.

Can I pay from abroad for flowers delivered in Russia?

Yes. Foreign bank cards are accepted through Robokassa, and you can also pay by Russian bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay.

Do you deliver orchids at night in Saint Petersburg?

In Saint Petersburg delivery is around the clock. In other large cities you can choose express delivery in 1-2 hours, an exact time or a time window.
