Dropping flowers: caring for a bouquet or sending one to Russia

“Dropping flowers” can mean flowers hanging their heads, petals falling from a bouquet, or dropping flowers off for someone. If your bouquet is drooping, check its water, recut the stems and clean the vase; if you mean delivery, Pyat Tsvetov (5 Flowers) delivers flowers across Russia. The next step depends on whether the problem is a bending stem, loose petals or arranging a handover.

The useful distinction is between a flower that cannot take up enough water and one whose petals are ageing or damaged. A fresh cut and clean water may help the first, while fallen petals cannot be restored. At Pyat Tsvetov, our starting point for care advice is the condition of the stems, water and flower heads. We have been working since 2011 and have three flower shops in Saint Petersburg, on Ilyushina Street, Obvodny Canal Embankment and Srednerogatskaya Street.

Check what is dropping before treating the bouquet

Look at the bouquet before taking it apart: a whole stem leaning sideways is different from a flower head bending just below the bloom. First check that every cut end reaches the water, especially in an arrangement with stems of different lengths. If several flowers have wilted together, inspect the water level and vase cleanliness before assuming each bloom has a separate problem. A cracked or sharply creased stem also needs attention, because adding water will not repair physical damage.

Examine any fallen petals as well as the flowers still standing. Dry edges, browning and petals that detach with a light touch can accompany ageing, while bruised patches may follow handling or pressure against wrapping. Petal loss alone does not establish a single cause, so avoid treating every shedding flower as dehydrated. If the query concerns a living plant dropping its flowers, identify the plant first: cut-bouquet care cannot diagnose its watering, light or root conditions.

Give drooping cut flowers a clean start

Wash the vase thoroughly, rinse away any detergent and refill it with clean water. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline, then use a clean, sharp tool to make a fresh cut at the base of each stem. Return the stems to water promptly, keeping their cut ends submerged. If you have a sachet of cut-flower food, follow its instructions and dilution rate; adding extra powder does not make the treatment more effective.

Place the bouquet away from direct sunlight, radiators and strong draughts, and keep it away from ripening fruit. Check the water daily, top it up as needed and replace it if it becomes cloudy or develops an unpleasant smell, cleaning the vase again. Some wilted flowers may regain firmness after taking up water, but recovery depends on their condition and the cause of the droop. Avoid household treatments such as boiling water, alcohol or improvised sugar mixtures when you do not have instructions for that particular flower.

Handle falling petals without damaging healthy flowers

Remove petals that have fallen into the water and take out blooms that are soft, mouldy or decaying. Work gently so that removing one stem does not scrape neighbouring flower heads. A few damaged outer petals do not always mean an entire bloom is finished; judge the remaining petals and the firmness of the stem. Repeatedly touching or shaking the bouquet to test it can loosen petals that would otherwise stay in place.

When one flower declines before the others, reshape the bouquet around the healthy stems instead of keeping a decaying bloom in the vase. If you shorten stems to remove damaged sections, use a smaller vase that still supports them without crowding the heads. Flowers naturally change as they open, and a wide-open bloom will not return to the tight shape it had on arrival. For a gift, allow room for that change rather than squeezing the bouquet into a narrow space or leaving it pressed against its wrapping.

Choose a message and bouquet that suit the recipient

When dropping flowers off as a gift, start with the recipient's preferences and the reason for sending them. In Russian gift-giving, an odd number of flowers is customary for celebratory bouquets where individual stems are counted; even numbers are traditionally associated with mourning. Colour meanings are less fixed, so a favourite colour is often a better guide than an online symbolism chart. If you are unsure how a bouquet will be read, make the occasion clear in your card.

A short, specific message helps a delivery feel personal, particularly when you are sending from abroad. For a birthday, name the occasion and add a wish; for sympathy, keep the wording gentle and avoid asking for a reply. Our delivery is anonymous by default, meaning the courier does not name the sender, and a card with your text is free. Include your name in the card if you want the recipient to know who sent the flowers, then use the Bouquets catalogue to choose.

Time the delivery around a real handover

Choose a delivery period when the recipient is likely to be available, especially if the flowers are going to a workplace or a building with controlled access. Express delivery in large cities is available in 1–2 hours after the order is confirmed. You can also arrange delivery at an exact time with a tolerance of plus or minus 30 minutes, or select a window of 09–12, 12–15, 15–18 or 18–21. Orders can be placed 1–30 days ahead, and delivery in Saint Petersburg operates around the clock.

The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, so a surprise bouquet may still involve advance contact. If the recipient is absent, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with the sender's consent, hand the flowers to a neighbour or concierge. Do not plan around an unattended doorstep drop, since the handover arrangements matter both to the recipient and to the flowers. When ordering from another country, make sure your chosen date and time refer to the destination city.

Order flowers to Russia with clear delivery details

Choose a bouquet, then prepare the recipient's name, telephone number and full delivery address, including any apartment or access details that will help the courier find them. Add your card text and specify the delivery date and timing you need. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. Check the Delivery and payment information when planning the order, particularly if the address is outside the city.

Online checkout uses CloudPayments; check the payment options displayed there before relying on a particular card. Acceptance of every foreign-issued card is not guaranteed, so leave time to establish whether your available payment method works. For questions about the order or delivery arrangements, call 8 (812) 507-67-05. Once the bouquet reaches the recipient, a clean vase, submerged stem ends and a suitable position are practical first steps towards keeping it in good condition.

Frequently asked questions

Does “dropping flowers” mean the same as “drooping flowers”?

Drooping flowers have bending stems or hanging heads, while flowers dropping petals are shedding parts of the bloom. “Dropping flowers off” means delivering or leaving a bouquet for someone.

Can a drooping bouquet recover?

Some flowers may recover after the vase is cleaned, the stems are freshly cut and the cut ends are returned to clean water. Broken stems, decaying blooms and petals that have already fallen cannot be restored by watering.

Should I add sugar to the vase?

Use cut-flower food according to its instructions if you have it. Avoid improvising with sugar alone, which does not provide the balanced treatment of a formulated flower food and can encourage microbial growth.

Can I send flowers to Russia without naming myself?

Yes, delivery is anonymous by default and the courier does not name the sender. A card with your text is free, so you can decide whether to identify yourself in the message.

Can I pay for a Russian flower delivery with a foreign card?

Online checkout uses CloudPayments, but acceptance of every foreign-issued card is not guaranteed. Check the options displayed at checkout before relying on your card for a time-sensitive order.
