Florist Missed Orders: What Goes Wrong and How We Prevent It
When a florist misses an order, the cause is almost never the bouquet itself: it is a missing flat number, a closed courtyard gate, a phone nobody answers or a time booked in the wrong time zone. At Pyat Tsvetov the courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, and if nobody is home we arrange a second delivery the same day or, with the sender's consent, leave the flowers with a neighbour or concierge. Most missed deliveries can be prevented with a few details given at checkout.
We have run flower shops in Saint Petersburg since 2011, and today we have three of our own, on Ilyushina Street, Obvodny Canal Embankment and Srednerogatskaya Street. A good share of our customers order from abroad for parents, partners and friends in Russia, and the same worry comes up at the counter and on the phone again and again: what happens if the flowers do not reach the person. This article collects the answers we give them.
What customers ask us about missed deliveries
The first question is usually about the doorstep: whether the courier will simply leave flowers outside if nobody opens. We do not do that. A bouquet left on a landing in winter or on a hot summer afternoon is a ruined bouquet, so every delivery starts with a phone call about 15 minutes before arrival, and a handover happens only to a person.
The second question is about secrecy. Delivery is anonymous by default, which means the courier does not tell the recipient, a neighbour or a concierge who sent the flowers. If you want your name to be known, write it on the card, which is included free with your own text.
The third question is about speed, because people often remember a birthday on the day itself. In large cities express delivery arrives 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed, and in Saint Petersburg we deliver around the clock. Speed, however, is exactly where orders are most often missed: the quicker the booking, the more likely an entrance number or a phone number is left out, so a calm minute spent on the form saves an hour later.
Saint Petersburg addresses: courtyards, arches and paradnayas
Our home city is beautiful and difficult for couriers. In the historic centre many buildings are entered through an arch into a courtyard, sometimes through two or three courtyards in a row, and the entrance (in Petersburg it is called a paradnaya) may not face the street at all. A street name and building number alone will bring the courier to the right block, but not to the right door.
For any Petersburg address give the building number with its letter or korpus, the entrance number, the floor and the flat, and the code for the gate or intercom if there is one. A short note such as 'second courtyard, door on the left past the arch' saves more time than anything else. In new districts such as those near Srednerogatskaya Street, residential complexes often have a fenced territory with its own gate, so mention it.
Offices and business centres need the company name, floor and a contact who can come down to reception. Hospitals and clinics often do not let couriers into wards, so arrange for a relative or a nurse's post to receive the bouquet.
Bouquets we can deliver
The phone call and a recipient who is out
The call about 15 minutes before arrival is the single most useful step in preventing a missed order. It tells the courier that someone is home, and it gives the recipient a chance to explain the way in. For this to work, the phone number in the order must belong to the recipient or to someone who will be with them, not to you abroad.
Many people in Russia do not answer unfamiliar numbers, and older relatives especially may ignore a call they are not expecting. If the surprise is less important than the handover, warn them that a delivery is coming. If the surprise matters, give the number of a family member or flatmate who is in on the plan.
If nobody is home, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with your consent, give the flowers to a neighbour or concierge. Decide which you prefer when you order. That way we do not have to reach you in another time zone while the bouquet waits.
Night, early morning and other Petersburg-only options
In Saint Petersburg we deliver around the clock, which changes how you can plan. A bouquet can arrive at the moment a partner lands at Pulkovo, after a late theatre performance or first thing on a birthday morning. Night and early deliveries are also the ones where a missed handover hurts most, so for them an exact time and a confirmed phone number are essential.
For an exact time we keep to plus or minus 30 minutes. If you are not tied to a precise moment, a window is more forgiving: 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21. Choose the window when the person is most predictably at home, which for many working people is the evening one.
Remember the white nights too. In June it is light almost all night in Petersburg, and people stay out late; a delivery booked for 23:00 may find the recipient still on the embankment. Ask before you book if you are not sure of their plans.
Orders to other cities and from abroad
We deliver flowers across Russia, not only in Petersburg. Outside our city the same principles apply, with one more risk: time zones. Russia spans eleven of them, so always write the delivery time in the recipient's local time and double-check it if the city is in Siberia or the Far East.
For fixed dates such as 8 March, 14 February, Teachers' Day or New Year, pre-order 1-30 days ahead. These are the days when couriers are busiest and recipients are most often out celebrating, so an early booking with a clear time window is the best protection against a missed order. If you are sending to several people at once, our guide to ordering flowers for a group is useful.
Payment is online on the site by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay. Foreign bank cards are accepted, with payment processed through Robokassa, so you can pay from abroad without asking relatives in Russia to help. Full terms are on the delivery and payment page.
Keeping a bouquet fresh after a late handover
Sometimes a bouquet waits a few hours with a concierge or arrives later than planned. A well-made bouquet in water or with a water pack copes with that easily, and the recipient can still keep it for a week or more. The first care steps matter most: trim the stems by 1-2 cm at an angle with a sharp knife, strip leaves below the waterline and put the flowers into clean cool water straight away.
Petersburg flats are heated hard from October to April, and a vase next to a radiator loses days of life. Keep flowers in the coolest bright spot of the room, away from fruit, and change the water every one or two days. When you choose, hardy flowers such as roses, chrysanthemums and alstroemeria cope better with any delay than tulips or peonies; you can compare options in our bouquets catalogue.
If you have questions about a specific address, timing or bouquet, call us on 8 (812) 507-67-05. Talking it through before you pay is the simplest way to make sure your order is never one of the missed ones.
