Gala Dinner Flowers: What Our Customers Ask Before a Formal Evening
The best gala dinner flowers are calm, long-lasting blooms arranged so that guests can see each other: low compact centrepieces or tall slender vases, a palette of two or three colours, and almost no fragrance near the food. A guest who wants to honour the host or a laureate usually brings or sends a neat hand-tied bouquet that can stand in water for the rest of the evening.
Pyat Tsvetov has run its own flower shops in Saint Petersburg since 2011, and before every season of jubilees, award ceremonies and company anniversaries we hear the same handful of questions at the counter. This guide collects the answers: how a gala table should look, which flowers hold up through a long evening, what to give the person being celebrated, and how to arrange delivery to a venue or a home in Russia when you are organising or congratulating from another country.
Question one: what should go to the venue and what to the person
Customers often mix two different jobs. Table and hall decoration is part of the event design and is planned together with the venue, the seating plan and the lighting. A personal bouquet is a gift from you to one person: the host, the hero of a jubilee, a speaker or a colleague receiving an award. Decide first which of the two you need, because the size, the timing and the delivery address are completely different.
Timing differs as well. Venue decoration is usually set up in the hours before guests arrive and is coordinated with the event manager, while a personal bouquet can arrive at the hall shortly before the start or at the honoree's home earlier the same day. Write down the venue address, the hall name and a contact person before you order either one; it saves a lot of calls on the day.
For hall decoration in Saint Petersburg, our guide to event venue florals for a private gala walks through the ordering steps. For a company evening with a buffet and stage, see flowers for a Russian corporate gala. The rest of this article focuses mostly on the gift bouquet, which is what most readers abroad want to arrange.
Height, scent and pollen: the table rules florists follow
Seated guests need to see faces across the table, so centrepieces are kept either low, about the height of a wine glass, or lifted high on slim stands with the flowers above eye level. Anything in between turns dinner into a game of peering round stems. On long banquet tables, several small low arrangements in a line look lighter and leave room for plates and glasses.
Strongly scented flowers belong at the entrance, not on the dining table. Oriental lilies, hyacinths, freesia in quantity and tuberose compete with the food and can give sensitive guests a headache in a warm hall. Roses with a mild scent, lisianthus, hydrangea, carnations and greenery like eucalyptus are safe choices.
Pollen is the third issue. Lily anthers leave orange stains that are very hard to remove from white linen and evening wear, so ask for them to be taken out before the flowers go on the table or into a gift bouquet. Bouquets for the honoree should also be free of anything that drips or sheds, since they will be held for photographs.

Colours and flowers that last a long evening
A gala evening usually lasts four to six hours in a heated hall under warm lighting. White, cream, powder pink, burgundy and deep green look rich in that light, while pale blue and lilac tend to fade into grey. Two or three colours with plenty of greenery look more expensive than a bright mix of everything.
For stamina, choose roses, spray roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, lisianthus, alstroemeria and orchids. Hydrangea is beautiful but drinks a lot, so it must stand in water rather than in a dry arrangement. Tulips and ranunculus keep opening and bending after cutting, which suits a relaxed spring dinner better than a strict formal table.
Match the palette to the event. Charity and awards evenings suit classic white and green. A company anniversary can carry a hint of corporate colour in ribbon or a few accent stems. A family jubilee, for a grandmother's eightieth birthday for example, welcomes warmer, softer tones.
The gift bouquet: size, stem count and the card
The person being celebrated at a gala often receives a dozen bouquets in one evening and has to carry them home. A compact, well-tied bouquet with a short wrap is the considerate choice; a huge armful usually ends up on the floor by the cloakroom. If you want to make a grand gesture, send it to the honoree's home rather than to the hall.
Russian etiquette still matters at formal events. A small bouquet should have an odd number of stems, because even numbers are reserved for mourning; once a bouquet is large, nobody counts. For men, florists choose restrained designs: roses, callas or chrysanthemums in deep red, burgundy or white with greenery, no bows or glitter. All-yellow bouquets are better avoided at a romantic or very formal occasion, as older guests may read them as a hint of parting.
The card is free and it carries more weight than people expect. Name the occasion, for example a jubilee, an award or the company's anniversary, add one warm sentence and your signature. Delivery is anonymous by default and the courier does not name the sender, so if you want to be recognised, the card is where you say who you are.
Timing delivery to a gala in Russia
For an evening event, deliver on the day so the flowers are fresh. You can choose an exact time (plus or minus 30 minutes) or one of the windows: 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21. Most of our customers pick 12-15 or 15-18 for a dinner starting at seven, which leaves time for the bouquet to reach the right hands before guests arrive.
When the date is fixed well in advance, pre-order 1-30 days ahead and simply check the details nearer the time. In large cities express delivery takes 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed, which helps when you learn about the event late. In Saint Petersburg delivery runs around the clock, so a bouquet can even reach the honoree at home after the dinner ends.
For delivery to a restaurant or hall, give the venue name, the name of the room and the person who will receive the flowers. The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, so give a number that will be answered that day. If the recipient is not there, we agree a second delivery the same day or hand the flowers to a neighbour or concierge with your consent.
Ordering from abroad and caring for the flowers afterwards
Choose a bouquet in the catalogue and pay online by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay; foreign bank cards are accepted through Robokassa. City delivery costs 500 RUB, and for suburbs and remote districts the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. The full terms are on the delivery and payment page, and questions are answered by phone at 8 (812) 507-67-05.
After the evening, the flowers deserve a second life. Recut the stems at an angle, put them in clean cool water, remove leaves below the waterline and keep the vase away from radiators and the fruit bowl. Low table arrangements can be split into small jars and spread around the flat, and roses and chrysanthemums cared for this way often stay fresh for a week.
Frequently asked questions
How high should gala dinner centrepieces be?
Keep them low, about the height of a wine glass, or raise them on slim stands above eye level. The middle height blocks guests' faces across the table.
Which flowers are best for a long gala evening?
Roses, spray roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, lisianthus, alstroemeria and orchids hold up well in a warm hall. Hydrangea is lovely but must stay in water.
What bouquet should I give the guest of honour?
A compact, well-tied bouquet with an odd number of stems if it is small, in calm colours, with a short card naming the occasion. Send a large gift to their home instead of the venue.
When should flowers for a gala be delivered?
On the day, usually in the 12-15 or 15-18 window for an evening dinner. You can also pick an exact time or pre-order 1-30 days ahead.
Can I pay with a foreign card?
Yes, foreign bank cards are accepted through Robokassa. Bank cards, SBP and Yandex Pay also work for online payment on the site.
