The most common question we get after a delivery is not about temperature or sunlight — it is about the water. Customers assume that topping up the vase is enough, and then call three days later wondering why their roses are drooping. The short answer is that bacteria colonise standing water within twenty-four hours and block the stem's ability to drink, no matter how much fresh water you pour on top. Changing the water completely, trimming the stems and rinsing the vase is not a ritual — it is the single most effective thing you can do to add days to a bouquet's life.
Why Vase Water Goes Bad So Quickly
Cut flower stems release sugars, proteins and plant tissue into the water from the moment they are placed in a vase. These compounds are food for bacteria, and at room temperature — typically 18 to 22 degrees Celsius in a Russian apartment — a bacterial colony can double in size every hour or two. Within twenty-four hours the water turns cloudy and starts to smell faintly sour, which is a reliable sign that the bacterial load is already high enough to begin blocking the xylem vessels inside the stem. Those vessels are the channels that carry water up to the petals, and once they are clogged the flower cannot rehydrate even if it is sitting in a full vase.
Preservative sachets that come with bouquets from Five Flowers contain a biocide, usually a compound based on aluminium sulphate or a citric acid blend, plus a small amount of sugar to feed the flowers. They slow bacterial growth significantly, but they do not stop it. By day two, even treated water has enough microbial activity to start narrowing the stem channels. For most mixed bouquets — combinations of roses, alstroemeria, chrysanthemums and spray carnations — changing the water every two days is the practical standard. That interval keeps bacterial counts low enough to maintain good stem function without requiring the customer to handle the bouquet every single day. However, two days is a starting point, not a fixed rule, and several variables push that interval shorter. Room temperature is the biggest one. If your apartment runs warmer than 22 degrees Celsius, which is common in Russian homes during the heating season from October to April when central heating is often not adjustable, change the water daily. Warm water accelerates bacterial growth in almost direct proportion to the temperature rise.
The second variable is stem type. Hollow-stemmed flowers such as delphiniums and lupins collect water inside the stem itself, and that trapped water ferments faster than the water in the vase. With these varieties, daily changes are advisable from day one. Thick, woody stems like those on sunflowers or hydrangeas create a lot of plant debris when cut and cloud the water faster than thin-stemmed flowers. Tulips are a special case: they continue growing after being cut, sometimes by several centimetres, and their stems produce a mucilaginous sap that turns vase water milky within a day. Change tulip water daily without exception. Lilies are more forgiving and tolerate a two-day interval well, but remove the pollen-bearing anthers before placing them in the vase — pollen that falls into the water accelerates decomposition noticeably.
The Correct Way to Do a Full Water Change
Pouring old water out and refilling is only half the job. The vase itself needs to be rinsed, because a thin biofilm — a sticky layer of bacteria — forms on the glass or ceramic surface within the first day. If you refill without rinsing, the new water picks up that biofilm immediately and the bacterial count climbs back to problematic levels within a few hours rather than a full day. Use cool running water and a bottle brush or a rolled cloth to scrub the inside of the vase. Dish soap is fine but rinse it out completely, because soap residue can block stem vessels just as bacteria do.
While the vase is drying or being rinsed, trim the stems. Cut at least one centimetre from each stem at a forty-five-degree angle using sharp scissors or a knife. The angled cut increases the surface area available for water uptake and prevents the stem end from sitting flat against the vase bottom, which would seal it off. Make this cut under running water or while the stems are submerged in a bowl — cutting in open air allows an air bubble to enter the stem channel instantly, and that bubble acts as a plug. Professionals in the shop cut under water every single time for this reason. Refill the vase with cool water, around 15 to 18 degrees Celsius, add a fresh preservative sachet if you have one, and return the bouquet. The whole process takes about five minutes and genuinely extends vase life by two to three days compared with simple topping-up.
Varieties That Need Special Attention
Roses are the flower we deliver most often, and they generate the most water-change questions. Standard large-headed roses — varieties like Explorer, Avalanche or Red Naomi — need water changed every two days in a cool room and daily in a warm one. The tell-tale sign that the water interval is too long is a bent neck: the stem just below the head goes soft and the rose droops at ninety degrees. At that point, recut the stem very short, place the rose in deep cool water for two hours, and it will usually recover. Prevention is easier: consistent water changes stop bent neck from developing.
Gerberas have hollow stems and are particularly vulnerable to bacterial blockage. They should have their water changed daily, and their stems should be kept short — no more than twenty centimetres submerged — because longer submerged stems create more surface area for bacterial attachment. Eustoma, also called lisianthus, is the opposite: it is quite tolerant of two-day intervals and does not produce much debris. Peonies, available from late April through June in Russia, need daily water changes because their large, dense heads pull enormous amounts of water and the stems release a great deal of organic material. Orchid stems in vases, as opposed to potted plants, are less common but do appear in modern arrangements; they are slow to decay and tolerate two-day intervals easily. Knowing the specific varieties in your bouquet is the most direct way to set the right schedule.
Water Temperature, Tap Water and Common Mistakes
Cold water is almost always better than warm for vase flowers, with one well-known exception: tulips open faster in warm water, so if you want them to bloom quickly for a dinner table, use water at around 25 degrees Celsius. For everything else, use water between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius. Very cold water, straight from the refrigerator, slows metabolism too much and can cause petal damage in tropical flowers like anthuriums or birds of paradise. Room-temperature water, which many people use out of convenience, is acceptable but allows bacteria to establish faster than cool water does.
Tap water in Saint Petersburg is soft and slightly acidic, which actually suits most cut flowers reasonably well. In cities with harder water, the mineral content can leave deposits on stems that partially block uptake, so filtered water is worth using if you notice your flowers fading unusually fast. The most common mistakes we see are: adding aspirin to the water, which has no reliable effect on bacteria at the concentrations people use; adding bleach in quantities that are too high, which damages stems; and placing flowers near a fruit bowl. Ripening fruit, particularly apples and bananas, releases ethylene gas, which accelerates petal drop and ageing in most cut flowers. Moving the vase away from fruit and away from direct sunlight addresses two of the biggest causes of early wilting that have nothing to do with the water itself.
Setting a Practical Schedule for a Full Vase Life

From day six onward, switch to daily water changes if you have not already, because the remaining flowers are working harder to stay hydrated as their stems age and their uptake capacity decreases. Keep trimming stems at each change. By day eight or nine you will likely have a smaller, tighter arrangement of the hardier survivors — chrysanthemums, alstroemeria, statice — which can continue for several more days with daily care. This approach treats vase maintenance as a progression rather than a fixed routine, and it reflects what actually happens to the flowers biologically over time. The reward for following it is a bouquet that looks presentable for well over a week rather than collapsing by day four, which is what happens when the water is simply topped up and left.

Can I just top up the vase with water instead of changing it completely?
Topping up adds clean water but does nothing about the bacteria already living in the old water and coating the vase walls. The biofilm on the glass continues feeding and multiplying. A full change with a vase rinse resets the bacterial count. Topping up buys a few hours at most; a proper change buys another full day or two of vase life.
Does the type of vase material affect how quickly the water goes bad?
Glass and glazed ceramic are easiest to clean thoroughly and do not harbour bacteria in surface pores. Unglazed terracotta and some plastics are more porous and develop biofilm faster. Metal vases can react with water and release ions that stress some flower varieties. Clear glass is the most practical choice because you can see immediately when the water is clouding.
