Flower delivery when the recipient is not at home

Flower delivery when the recipient is not at home

If the recipient is not home, we agree a second delivery on the same day or arrange to hand the flowers to a neighbour or concierge with the sender’s consent. Our courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival. If you are sending flowers to Russia from abroad, choose a delivery period when the recipient is likely to be available and consider whether you would approve someone else receiving them.

Customers often ask us how to keep a flower delivery a surprise while making sure it reaches the right person. At Pyat Tsvetov (5 Flowers), we have been helping customers with their bouquets since 2011 and have three shops in Saint Petersburg. A successful handover starts with practical details: a usable recipient phone number, a clear address and a realistic delivery time.

The call before arrival and the next step if nobody is home

The courier’s call about 15 minutes before arrival gives the recipient a chance to explain whether they are available to receive the flowers. Before ordering, check that you have their current phone number rather than an old number saved in your contacts. If you live abroad, remember that the recipient may be working, commuting or asleep while you are choosing the bouquet.

If the recipient is absent, the next step is an agreed second delivery that day or a handover to a neighbour or concierge with your consent. A second visit needs to be arranged; do not build your plans around an assumed return time. Someone being nearby also does not make them an approved recipient, so decide beforehand which alternative you would feel comfortable authorising.

An absence and an unanswered phone are different situations, and neither tells you where the recipient actually is. Avoid assuming that silence means they have gone out or that a neighbour will know their plans. If you need to discuss delivery arrangements, call 8 (812) 507-67-05 and explain the circumstances, including any alternative handover you would accept.

Choose a delivery time around the recipient’s day

A familiar routine is usually a more useful guide than the date alone. A birthday recipient may spend the evening at a restaurant, while someone working from home may still be unavailable during meetings. Where possible, choose a period when they can answer the phone and take a few minutes to receive the bouquet, rather than simply a time when they might be inside the building.

Our delivery choices include an exact time with a tolerance of plus or minus 30 minutes, or the windows 09–12, 12–15, 15–18 and 18–21. Treat the exact-time option as a window when coordinating another event, since the stated tolerance matters. For the available arrangements and city delivery charge, see delivery and payment information.

Express delivery in large cities takes 1–2 hours after the order is confirmed, and flowers can also be pre-ordered 1–30 days ahead. Count express timing from confirmation, rather than from the moment you start browsing. We deliver around the clock in Saint Petersburg; for another Russian city, use the delivery options relevant to that destination rather than assuming the same overnight availability.

Decide whether a neighbour or concierge is suitable

A neighbour or concierge can be a practical alternative when the recipient is briefly away, but this handover requires the sender’s consent. Think about whether the person is known to the recipient and whether collecting the flowers will be straightforward. If you do not know the building or the neighbours, an agreed second delivery may be the more suitable choice.

The occasion matters as much as convenience. Flowers celebrating a family birthday may be easy to pass through a familiar concierge, while a private message may deserve a direct handover. Consider the recipient’s comfort before authorising another person to receive the bouquet, especially if the gift concerns a relationship or a sensitive personal occasion.

If you approve an alternative handover, make the intended person clear when discussing arrangements. A vague instruction such as ‘someone in the building’ leaves too much uncertainty about who should receive the gift. It is also sensible to think about what happens afterwards: the recipient needs to know whom to approach and should be able to collect the flowers without an unnecessary delay.

Keep the surprise while making the message clear

Delivery is anonymous by default: our courier does not name the sender. This can preserve a surprise, but it also means the recipient may not immediately understand who sent the flowers. Decide whether anonymity suits the occasion, particularly when you are sending a personal gift across a long distance and will not be there to explain it.

A card with your text is free, and a short signature often makes the gift easier to understand. Write the message in a language the recipient reads comfortably, and include enough context to make the occasion clear. A simple ‘Happy birthday, with love from Anna’ can be more useful than a long message that never identifies its author.

Bouquet meanings depend on personal associations, culture and the relationship between sender and recipient. If the message needs to be precise, put it into words on the card instead of expecting a flower colour to explain everything. You can choose the visual style from our bouquets catalogue and use the card to express the sentiment in your own voice.

Plan for the flowers after the handover

When choosing a delivery time, consider when the recipient will be able to put the flowers in water. A handover immediately before a long outing can leave them carrying a bouquet for hours or searching for somewhere to place it. A period when they expect to stay home gives them a better opportunity to unpack the flowers and prepare a vase.

For a cut-flower bouquet, start with a clean vase and fresh water, and remove leaves that would sit below the waterline. Refresh the stem ends with a clean, sharp tool before placing them in water. If flower food is supplied, follow its instructions; different arrangements may need different handling, so avoid dismantling one without knowing how it holds water.

Choose a place away from radiators, direct sunlight and ripening fruit, and check the water regularly. Top it up or replace it as needed, keeping the vase clean and removing fading material. These are useful care habits after a delayed handover too, although the bouquet’s condition and the varieties it contains will affect how long it remains attractive.

Order flowers to Russia with clear delivery details

We deliver flowers across Russia, so begin with the recipient’s city and full delivery address before selecting a delivery arrangement. Check the building and flat details carefully, and include access information you actually know. If you are unsure of an entrance or other address detail, verify it instead of guessing; a familiar-looking address in your contacts may no longer be current.

City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. Use the recipient’s destination when reviewing the arrangements, rather than judging by its distance from a city centre yourself. Before completing the order, check the address, recipient’s phone number, chosen timing and card text together so that the gift and delivery details agree.

Online checkout uses CloudPayments, and customers ordering from abroad should check the payment options displayed at checkout. Acceptance of every foreign card is not guaranteed, so leave time to review those options before a time-sensitive occasion. Our delivery and payment page is a useful starting point, and questions can be discussed by phone on 8 (812) 507-67-05.
