Russian City Naming Conventions for Sending Flowers

Russian city naming conventions reflect geography, personal names and history; common endings include -sk, -ovo and -grad, but they do not form a single rule for every place. English names may be established translations, such as Moscow, or transliterations, such as Moskva. For a flower delivery, identify the current city and its region before checking the street address, especially when using an older family address.
Customers ordering from abroad often have a city name copied from a relative's message, an old document or an English map. At Pyat Tsvetov (5 Flowers), we approach that name as the start of a delivery address: it must identify where the recipient actually is. We have operated since 2011 and have three own flower shops in Saint Petersburg, so this guide connects the naming question with the practical details needed to send flowers across Russia.
What common Russian city endings mean
The ending -grad is associated with the word for a city or town and appears in names such as Volgograd and Kaliningrad. The related element -gorod appears in Novgorod, whose name means 'new town'. These elements help explain how a name developed, but they are not separate address instructions. When ordering flowers, retain the whole recognised place name rather than translating individual parts into English.
Names ending in -sk, such as Tomsk and Omsk, often have a relationship to a river name or another geographical name. Endings such as -ovo, -evo and -ino occur in many settlement names and can reflect personal names or older naming patterns. An ending alone does not tell you whether a place is a large city, a small settlement or close to another destination. Use the full name and region to establish the location; do not infer delivery coverage or travel time from the spelling.
Why one city can have several English spellings
Moscow and Moskva refer to the same city: the first is the established English name, while the second represents the Russian pronunciation more directly. Saint Petersburg may appear as St Petersburg or Sankt-Peterburg in English-language material. Transliteration systems represent Russian sounds differently, which explains variations such as Yekaterinburg and Ekaterinburg. A spelling difference can therefore be harmless, but it needs checking against the rest of the address.
For a delivery, consistency is more useful than trying to choose the most scholarly transliteration. Copy the recipient's current address accurately and keep the same spelling of the city throughout your order details. If an English map and a family message use different versions, compare the region, street and building number before assuming they describe separate places. Avoid translating street names word by word, since an improvised English translation may make the address harder to recognise.

Historic names and similar names need different checks
Older documents may use names that are no longer the current city name. Leningrad refers to present-day Saint Petersburg, Sverdlovsk to Yekaterinburg, and Gorky to Nizhny Novgorod. However, Leningrad Oblast and Sverdlovsk Oblast remain current regional names, so a historic city name and a current region can look deceptively similar. Ask the recipient for their present address rather than updating an old envelope by changing just one word.
Similar names can also identify entirely different destinations. Nizhny Novgorod and Veliky Novgorod are different cities, as are Rostov-on-Don and Rostov Veliky. Keep qualifiers such as Nizhny, Veliky and on-Don in the delivery details instead of shortening the name to its most familiar part. If a relative simply says 'Novgorod' or 'Rostov', establish which city they mean before choosing a delivery date.
Build an address that identifies the recipient's location
A useful delivery address includes the city or settlement, the region where needed, the street, the building number and the flat or office number where applicable. Preserve any building letter, block or structure number supplied by the recipient; these details can distinguish separate buildings on the same street. A postcode is a useful additional check, but it does not replace the full street address. Include the recipient's name and a telephone number they can answer around the delivery time.
For a workplace, hospital or other large building, add the organisation name and any entrance or access instructions the recipient has provided. Establish whether the recipient will actually be at that address on the chosen day, particularly for a birthday that falls on a weekend. Our courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, so the telephone number matters even when the address is complete. If spelling or location remains uncertain, questions can be discussed by phone on 8 (812) 507-67-05.
Match the destination with the delivery schedule
We deliver flowers across Russia, with city delivery costing 500 RUB. For remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the delivery price when confirming the order. A familiar city name in a postal address does not by itself establish whether the destination is within the city or in a surrounding settlement. Check the full location and consult our delivery and payment information when planning the order.
Express delivery in large cities is available in 1–2 hours after the order is confirmed. You can also choose an exact time with a tolerance of plus or minus 30 minutes, a window of 09–12, 12–15, 15–18 or 18–21, or preorder 1–30 days ahead. When ordering from abroad, make the intended date and time clear for the recipient's location, since Russia spans several time zones. In Saint Petersburg, delivery is available around the clock; that schedule should not be assumed for other cities.
Choose the flowers and make the message clear
Once the destination is settled, choose flowers for the recipient and occasion rather than trying to match a supposed meaning of the city name. In Russian gift etiquette, an odd number of stems is the usual choice for a small, countable bouquet given on a happy occasion; even numbers are traditionally associated with mourning. Personal preferences still matter, including fragrance preferences and whether the bouquet will stand at home or at work. Browse the bouquets catalogue with those details in mind, and consider vase space as well as appearance.
A card with your text is free, and delivery is anonymous by default: the courier does not name the sender. Sign the card if you want the recipient to know who sent the flowers, and check the spelling of their name separately from the address. If the recipient is absent, we agree a second delivery the same day or handing the flowers to a neighbour or concierge with the sender's consent. Online checkout uses CloudPayments; check the payment options displayed there, since acceptance of every foreign card cannot be assumed.
Frequently asked questions
Are Moscow and Moskva different cities?
They are names for the same city. Moscow is the established English name, while Moskva is a transliteration of the Russian name.
Can I use Leningrad as the city name for a delivery?
Use the current city name, Saint Petersburg, and confirm the rest of the address is current too. Leningrad Oblast is still a current regional name and should not automatically be changed to Saint Petersburg.
Does a Russian city name ending tell me where it is?
Endings can offer clues about a name's origins, but they do not reliably identify its location or size. Check the complete place name and region, especially where similar names exist.
What should I check before sending flowers from abroad?
Confirm the current city, region where needed, full street address, recipient's telephone number and intended delivery time at their location. Check the options shown at CloudPayments checkout for payment.
Will the recipient know who sent the flowers?
Delivery is anonymous by default, and the courier does not name the sender. Add your name to the free card if you want the recipient to recognise the gift.
