Statice Lilac: A Guide to the Colour, Flower and Bouquet

Statice lilac usually means statice in a pale purple or lavender shade, rather than flowers from a lilac shrub. It has branching stems topped with clusters of small, papery cups, making it useful for adding soft colour and texture to fresh or dried bouquets. When choosing flowers, specify both the flower name and the shade: lilac statice.
In our shops, a useful distinction is whether a customer wants a particular flower or simply a lilac colour scheme. Those requests can produce very different bouquets, especially when a photograph is the starting point. At Pyat Tsvetov (5 Flowers), with three own flower shops in Saint Petersburg and a history dating to 2011, we encourage clear descriptions of colour, shape and occasion.
How to recognise lilac statice
Florists commonly use the name statice for cut flowers of Limonium sinuatum. Its stems divide into branches, each carrying clusters of small flowers surrounded by coloured, papery calyces. These persistent calyces provide much of the colour you notice in a bouquet. Look closely and you may also see tiny, lighter true flowers within them.
Lilac, the shrub Syringa, has a different appearance: fuller flower panicles, woody stems and recognisable individual florets. Statice has a drier, more angular outline and should not be chosen as a substitute for lilac's characteristic perfume. The word “lilac” in a statice description generally identifies a colour. It does not establish the plant's species or fragrance.
Lilac shades can range from a pale grey-purple to a stronger lavender, and photographs may shift the apparent tone. Describe whether you prefer a cool, blue-leaning purple or a warmer pink-purple when colour matters. A reference image helps explain that preference without establishing exact availability. Our statice identification guide explains the flower's distinguishing features.
Choosing colours and proportions for a bouquet
Lilac statice works well with white and cream flowers when you want a restrained palette. Pale pink brings out its warmer side, while deeper purple gives the arrangement more contrast. Choose one main colour relationship before adding extra shades. Too many similar pastel tones can make the intended lilac accent hard to distinguish.
For a bouquet with large focal flowers, statice can fill the smaller spaces between blooms and carry colour towards the edges. Its branched shape needs room: densely compressed clusters can obscure the focal flowers. In a bouquet made mainly of statice, the effect is more textured and informal. The right proportion depends on whether you want distinct blooms or an overall cloud of colour.
When ordering, distinguish “a bouquet containing lilac statice” from “a bouquet in lilac tones”. The first makes a particular flower central to the request; the second leaves more flexibility in the flower selection. Use the bouquets catalogue to explore arrangements, then ask about the flower and shade before relying on a particular composition. Do not infer lilac statice availability from colour alone.

Meaning, occasions and a message that feels appropriate
Statice is commonly associated with remembrance and lasting affection, partly because its papery colour persists when dried. These are floral traditions, rather than meanings every recipient will recognise. Lilac adds a gentle visual tone, but it has no single universal message. Let the card explain what you want the flowers to say.
For a birthday or a thank-you, lilac statice can support a light, affectionate arrangement. For a remembrance gesture, a restrained palette may suit the recipient's preferences better than a bright mixture. Consider the person's taste and the circumstances before choosing by symbolism. A flower associated with remembrance can still belong in a cheerful bouquet.
A short, specific message is usually more helpful than an elaborate explanation of flower language. For example, “Thinking of you on your birthday, with love from all of us” makes the occasion clear. Delivery with us is anonymous by default, so the courier does not name the sender. If you want the recipient to know who sent the flowers, sign the free card with your text.
Fresh statice care after the bouquet arrives
Place fresh statice in a clean vase with fresh water, and remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline. Use clean, sharp scissors or secateurs to refresh the stem ends before arranging them. If the bouquet contains other flowers, give their stems the same basic preparation. Leaves left underwater encourage dirty water and make vase maintenance harder.
Keep the arrangement away from radiators, strong direct sunlight and ripening fruit. Check the water daily, replenish it as needed, and change it when it becomes cloudy. Wash the vase when changing dirty water rather than simply topping it up. If you use cut-flower food, follow the packet instructions instead of estimating a stronger mixture.
The papery calyces can retain their colour even as other parts of the stem age, so appearance alone is not a reliable freshness check. Inspect the water, submerged stem ends and any softer flowers in a mixed bouquet. Remove deteriorating material promptly and handle the clusters gently to limit shedding. Avoid promising a fixed vase life: condition on arrival, room conditions and the other flowers all affect the result.
Drying lilac statice and keeping its shape
If you want to dry statice, select stems while the coloured clusters still look sound. Take them out of the water, remove unwanted foliage and divide them into small bunches. Hang the bunches upside down in a dry, shaded place with moving air. Allow space between them so the flower heads are not pressed together.
Drying time varies with humidity, bunch size and the condition of the stems. Check that the stems and clusters feel dry before placing them in a display. A crowded, damp location can encourage mould, while strong sunlight can fade the colour. Avoid enclosing flowers that still contain moisture in a sealed container.
Display dried statice in a dry vase without water, away from direct sunlight and humid rooms. Its calyces may hold their shape well, but dried branches become brittle and should be moved carefully. Lift stems from below the flower heads rather than gripping the clusters. For fresh care and drying in one place, see our statice flower guide.
Ordering flowers to Russia from abroad
Start with the recipient's city, the delivery address, a contact number and the intended date. State whether lilac statice itself is essential or whether the lilac colour is your priority, and have availability confirmed. We deliver flowers across Russia; city delivery costs 500 RUB. For remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the delivery price when confirming the order.
In large cities, express delivery is available 1–2 hours after the order is confirmed. You can also choose delivery at an exact time with a tolerance of ±30 minutes, or a window of 09–12, 12–15, 15–18 or 18–21. Orders can be placed 1–30 days ahead, which is useful when planning from another time zone. Delivery in Saint Petersburg is around the clock; read the delivery and payment information when arranging your order.
The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, so allow for that contact when planning a surprise. If the recipient is absent, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with the sender's consent, hand the flowers to a neighbour or concierge. Online checkout uses CloudPayments; check the options shown there, as acceptance of every foreign card is not guaranteed. For questions about your order, call 8 (812) 507-67-05.
Frequently asked questions
Is lilac statice the same flower as lilac?
No. Lilac statice generally means pale purple statice, a Limonium flower with papery calyces; lilac blossom comes from a Syringa shrub.
Does lilac statice have a special meaning?
Statice is commonly associated with remembrance and lasting affection. The lilac shade has no universal meaning, so use your card message to make the occasion and sentiment clear.
Should fresh lilac statice go in water?
Yes, keep fresh stems in a clean vase with fresh water and remove foliage below the waterline. If you choose to dry the stems, remove them from the water and hang them in small bunches in a dry, shaded, ventilated place.
Can I order a bouquet containing lilac statice for Russia?
We deliver flowers across Russia, but ask for confirmation of lilac statice availability before relying on that particular flower and shade. Explain whether the exact flower or the overall lilac palette matters most.
Can I pay for an order with a foreign bank card?
Online checkout uses CloudPayments. Check the payment options displayed at checkout; acceptance of every foreign card is not guaranteed.
