Will Flowers Be Okay in a Car Overnight?
Flowers will be okay in a car overnight only if the temperature inside stays cool but above freezing, roughly between 2 and 12 °C, and the bouquet has water. A mild spring or autumn night usually suits that, and most hardy flowers come through fine. A frosty winter night or a warm summer night does not: frost damages petals within an hour or two, and heat in a closed car makes a bouquet wilt long before morning.
In our Saint Petersburg shops this question comes up most often from customers who buy flowers the evening before a birthday or an early morning visit and do not want to carry them into a hotel or a friend's flat. Below is what we tell them: how temperature affects different flowers, which varieties tolerate a night in the car, and how to prepare a bouquet if you have no other choice.
Why temperature decides everything
Cut flowers keep living after they leave the plant: they breathe, drink and use up stored sugars. Cool air slows these processes, which is why florists keep flowers in chillers at around 2 to 8 °C. A car on a cool night works in a similar way, and a bouquet can even look fresher in the morning than one left in a warm living room.
The danger begins below zero. The water in petal cells freezes, the cell walls break, and after thawing the petals turn dark, glassy and limp. This damage cannot be reversed. Delicate flowers such as orchids, anthuriums and some tropical greenery suffer even at plus 5 to 8 °C, showing grey or translucent patches.
Heat is the opposite problem. Even after sunset, a closed car that has stood in the sun can stay well above the outside temperature for hours. At 25 °C and above, flowers lose water faster than they can drink it, especially if they are wrapped and standing dry. By morning the heads droop, and roses may not recover even after a long drink.
Season by season: a night in the car in Russia
Winter is the clear no. In Saint Petersburg and most of Russia, January and February nights are below zero, and a parked car cools to outside temperature within an hour or two. A bouquet left overnight in that cold will be lost. In winter, take the flowers inside even if it is only into an entrance hall or a cool stairwell.
Spring and autumn are the most forgiving. April, May, September and early October nights often sit between 3 and 12 °C, which is close to ideal chiller temperature. A wrapped bouquet with a water pack or in a bucket will usually be fine. The risk is a sudden frost on clear nights, so check the forecast before deciding.
Summer is risky for a different reason. White nights in Saint Petersburg are mild, but in many Russian cities the temperature stays above 20 °C after dark, and the car keeps the daytime heat. If the night is warm, the cabin is not a fridge, and the bouquet is better off in a cool room. For the related daytime question, see our article on whether flowers will be okay in a car for 2 hours.

Which flowers tolerate a cold car and which do not
Hardy flowers handle a cool night best: chrysanthemums, carnations, alstroemeria, roses with firm heads, eucalyptus and most greenery. Spring bulbs such as tulips and narcissi actually prefer cool conditions and often look better after a chilly night, as long as there is no frost. Gerberas and lilies are moderately tolerant but dislike sharp drops.
Sensitive flowers should never stay in a car overnight in cool weather. Orchids, anthuriums, calla lilies and tropical leaves react badly to temperatures under 10 °C. Hydrangeas lose water quickly through their large heads and can wilt in a stuffy car even when the air is not hot.
Potted plants are more vulnerable than people expect, because the roots in a small pot cool or heat through quickly. A potted orchid or azalea left in a cold car overnight usually drops its buds within a few days, even if the leaves look fine in the morning.
If you must leave flowers in the car overnight
Give the bouquet water. A bouquet in a water pack or a hydro-bag is the best case. If it came without one, stand it upright in a bucket or a tall bottle with a few centimetres of water, wedged in a footwell so it cannot fall. A bouquet lying flat on the seat without water dehydrates much faster.
Choose the coolest stable spot. The footwell behind the front seats is usually the most protected from the windows and from morning sun. Do not leave flowers on the dashboard or the rear shelf, where the first sunlight hits and the temperature climbs quickly. Make sure the car is parked so the morning sun does not fall straight into the cabin.
Keep the wrapping on in cool weather and loosen it in warm weather. Paper and film protect petals from cold air and from touching the windows, which can be several degrees colder than the cabin. On a warm night, open the wrapping at the top so moisture can escape and the flowers do not steam. Our article on leaving flowers in the car overnight has more practical examples.
Better options than the car
The best place for a bouquet overnight is a cool room without radiators: a hallway, a balcony in spring and autumn when there is no frost, or a bathroom with the heating off. Trim the stems by one or two centimetres, put them in clean cool water, and keep them away from fruit, which releases ethylene and speeds up ageing.
A fridge also works for many flowers if there is space and no fruit or vegetables inside. Set it to its warmest setting and keep the bouquet away from the back wall, where frost forms. Our guide on storing a bouquet in the fridge overnight lists which flowers handle it and which do not.
Often the simplest solution is not to store flowers at all. If the gift is for the morning, order delivery for that time and the bouquet will travel from the shop to the recipient without a night in between.
Ordering flowers for an exact time in Russia
We deliver across Russia. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for suburbs and remote districts the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. In large cities express delivery takes 1 to 2 hours after confirmation, and in Saint Petersburg we deliver around the clock, so an early morning or late evening surprise does not require keeping flowers overnight.

We deliver bouquets across Russia in 1–2 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave flowers in the car overnight in winter?
No. Below zero the water in the petals freezes and the damage is irreversible after thawing. In winter, always take the bouquet inside, even into a cool hallway.
What temperature is safe for flowers in a car overnight?
Roughly 2 to 12 °C is safe for most hardy flowers with water. Tropical flowers such as orchids and anthuriums need at least 10 to 12 °C.
Is a cold car better than a warm room?
On a cool night without frost, often yes: low temperature slows ageing in the same way a florist's chiller does. A warm room with radiators shortens vase life more than a cool car.
My flowers froze in the car. Can they be saved?
Petals that look dark, glassy or translucent after thawing will not recover. Remove the damaged flowers and keep any stems that stayed firm in cool fresh water.
Should I take the wrapping off before leaving flowers in the car?
In cool weather keep it on, because it protects the petals from cold glass and air. On a warm night open the top so moisture can escape.
