Bely Flowers: What White Bouquets Mean in Russia and How to Choose One
"Bely" is the Russian word for white, so bely flowers are simply white flowers - white roses, chrysanthemums, lilies, tulips, hydrangeas and similar blooms. In Russia a white bouquet is one of the most versatile gifts: it is given for weddings, birthdays, the birth of a child, the first day of school and anniversaries, and it is also appropriate for condolences. What changes the message is not the colour but the flower, the number of stems and the way the bouquet is arranged.
Customers in our Saint Petersburg shops ask about white flowers almost every day, and the questions repeat: which white flowers last longest, whether white is acceptable for a birthday, how many stems to choose and how to keep white petals from browning. Below we answer these questions in the order we usually discuss them at the counter.
Which white flowers customers choose most often
White roses are the most requested white flower in our shops. They come in very different shades: pure snow white, cream, ivory with a green tint, and soft champagne. Pure white varieties look formal and festive; cream and ivory look warmer and suit birthdays and anniversaries. Large-headed roses on long stems make a classic bouquet, while spray roses with several small buds per stem give a lighter, garden-like look.
White chrysanthemums are the practical choice. Single-headed varieties with big round blooms and spray chrysanthemums with many small daisy-like flowers both last up to two weeks in a vase, which makes them a good option when the bouquet has to travel or the recipient is older and will not change the water every day. White alstroemeria and carnations are similarly long-lasting and look elegant in mixed white arrangements.
For more volume and fragrance, people choose white lilies, white hydrangeas, eustoma (lisianthus) and, in late spring, white peonies. Lilies have a strong scent, which some recipients love and others find too heavy in a small flat. Hydrangeas create a large, airy bouquet but need plenty of water. White tulips are the most popular white flower from February to May, especially around the 8th of March.
What a white bouquet means in Russia
In Russian tradition white is associated with purity, a new beginning, respect and sincerity. That is why white flowers are the usual choice for brides, for young girls, for a newborn's first homecoming and for the 1st of September, when children bring flowers to their teachers. A white bouquet says "I respect you" without being overly romantic, which makes it a safe choice when you do not know the recipient's taste well.
Customers abroad sometimes worry that white is a mourning colour. In Russia it is not exclusively so: white flowers are brought to funerals, but so are red carnations and dark roses. What signals mourning is an even number of stems. For any happy occasion, choose an odd number - 5, 7, 9, 11, 15 - if the bouquet has fewer than about a dozen and a half flowers. For large bouquets of 25 or 51 stems the count is less noticeable, but most people still keep it odd.
A bouquet of only white flowers reads as calm and elegant. If you want it to feel more celebratory for a birthday, ask for a white base with a single accent: pale pink roses, soft greenery like eucalyptus, or a little blue in spring. This keeps the white character while making the message clearly festive.

Which occasions suit white flowers best
Weddings are the obvious occasion, and guests often bring white or cream bouquets to match the bride. For a wedding guest bouquet, choose something compact and easy to hold, because the couple receives dozens of bouquets in one evening. White roses with eustoma or spray roses are a reliable combination that stays fresh through a long celebration.
For birthdays, white flowers suit women of any age, and cream or ivory tones are especially popular for mothers and grandmothers. For a newborn, white with soft pastel accents is traditional regardless of whether the baby is a boy or a girl. For condolences, a calm white arrangement of chrysanthemums, roses or lilies with an even number of stems is appropriate, and you can mention the purpose when ordering so the bouquet is assembled with restraint.
White flowers are also a good choice for business gifts and for people you know only formally - a colleague, a doctor, a landlord. They carry no romantic hint and look neat in any interior.
How to keep white petals fresh and clean
The main complaint about white flowers is that damage shows immediately. A bruised rose petal turns brown within a day, and a drop of lily pollen leaves a yellow stain. When the bouquet arrives, remove the anthers from lilies as soon as the buds open, using a tissue rather than fingers. If any pollen does fall on fabric, brush it off with a dry piece of tape instead of wiping it, which only rubs it in.
Trim the stems at an angle by 1-2 cm, remove leaves that would sit in the water and use a clean vase. Change the water every two days and trim the stems again each time. Keep the bouquet away from direct sun and radiators: white petals scorch and turn papery faster than coloured ones. Outer rose petals that brown first can be removed gently, revealing a clean flower underneath.
Hydrangeas need the most water of all white flowers. If the head starts to droop, submerge it completely in cool water for 30-40 minutes, then return it to the vase. Chrysanthemums and alstroemeria need almost no special care and usually outlast everything else in a mixed white bouquet.
