Birthday Flowers: Choosing the Right Bouquet for Every Recipient

The best birthday flowers are the ones that match the recipient's age, your relationship and their taste: roses and peonies for a partner, soft pastel bouquets or long-lasting chrysanthemums for a mother or grandmother, bright gerberas and mixed seasonal bouquets for friends, and compact, neutral arrangements for colleagues. In Russia a birthday bouquet should have an odd number of stems if it contains fewer than about fifteen flowers, and it is handed over on the day itself, never in advance.

In our Saint Petersburg shops, birthday orders make up the largest part of the work every day, and customers usually come with the same three questions: what to choose for a particular person, how many flowers to give, and how to make sure the bouquet arrives on time. This article goes through each of them with the advice we give at the counter.

Choosing birthday flowers by recipient

For a wife, girlfriend or partner, roses remain the most popular choice, and the colour carries the message: red for passion, pink for tenderness, white or cream for elegance. In late spring and early summer many customers switch to peonies, which feel more personal and generous than roses. If your partner has a favourite flower, that always beats any general rule; a bouquet of her favourite tulips says more than an expensive arrangement she does not care about.

For a mother or grandmother, choose flowers that last and are easy to care for. Chrysanthemums, alstroemeria, carnations and spray roses stay fresh for one to two weeks and do not need daily attention. Soft colours - cream, peach, pale pink, lilac - are the usual choice, and a bouquet in a box or basket is convenient because it does not need a vase. Strongly scented lilies are better avoided for older people who spend a lot of time in a small room.

For friends, bright seasonal bouquets with gerberas, sunflowers, ranunculus or mixed garden-style flowers feel cheerful and informal. For a colleague or boss, choose a neat, medium-sized bouquet in neutral or calm tones, without red roses, which in Russia read as romantic. For men, flowers are given less often, but for a round birthday or a respected older man a strict bouquet of long-stemmed roses, chrysanthemums or callas in dark red, white or green is appropriate.

How many stems to give and other Russian customs

The rule most foreigners hear about is the odd number. In Russia even numbers of flowers are associated with funerals, so a birthday bouquet of a few stems should contain 3, 5, 7, 9 or 11 flowers. In large bouquets of 15 or more stems the count matters less, though many people still keep it odd out of habit. Spray roses and chrysanthemums with several heads per stem count by stems, not by blooms.

Another firm custom is not to celebrate or give gifts before the actual birthday - it is considered bad luck. If the date falls on a weekday and the party is planned for the weekend before, people usually bring flowers to the party anyway but save the main congratulations for the day itself. Belated flowers are fine and are always welcome.

Some customers like to match the number of flowers to the age, especially for young women. For older recipients this is not practical, and for round birthdays such as 50 or 70 a large bouquet without counting is more usual. We explain these traditions in more detail in our articles on stem count, colours and varieties and on birthday flowers for round numbers.

Seasonal birthday flowers worth asking for

The season changes what we recommend. From late winter to May, tulips, hyacinths, mimosa around early March, ranunculus and anemones make a birthday bouquet feel fresh and spring-like. From late May to early July, peonies are the most requested birthday flower in Saint Petersburg, and their season is short, so it is worth ordering them early.

Summer and early autumn bring sunflowers, garden roses, dahlias, hydrangeas and asters - generous, colourful flowers that suit relaxed birthday celebrations. In late autumn and winter the focus moves to roses, chrysanthemums, eustoma and amaryllis, often combined with eucalyptus, berries or cotton for texture. When you are unsure, describe the person and the occasion when ordering, and the florist will suggest what looks best that week.

Size is the other question customers ask about. A compact bouquet of 7-15 stems is right for a colleague, a teacher or a visit to friends, where the recipient may carry it home on public transport. A large, generous bouquet makes more sense for a partner, a mother or a round birthday at home. If the person lives alone in a small flat, a medium bouquet in a box often works better than a huge armful that needs a bucket.

Timing a birthday delivery when you are abroad

Most birthday orders from abroad arrive in the morning or around midday, so the recipient enjoys the flowers all day. If the person works, deliver to the office before lunch or to their home in the evening window. A delivery timed for 09-12 is a good default for older relatives, who are usually at home in the morning.

For a fixed date, pre-ordering takes away the stress: you can place the order 1-30 days ahead and choose an exact time (plus or minus 30 minutes) or a window of 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21. If you remember at the last minute, express delivery in large cities takes 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed. In Saint Petersburg delivery works around the clock, so a bouquet can arrive right at midnight if you want to be the first to congratulate someone. More on planning across time zones is in our guide to sending birthday flowers to Russia from abroad.

Before ordering, check the address carefully, including the entrance, floor and intercom code, and give the recipient's phone number. The courier calls about 15 minutes before arrival. If the person is not there, we arrange a second delivery the same day or leave the bouquet with a neighbour or concierge with your consent.

The card, anonymity and payment

A card with your text is free, and for birthdays it matters more than people think: recipients often keep the card long after the flowers have faded. Write a short, personal message and sign it the way the recipient knows you. If you want a surprise, delivery is anonymous by default and the courier does not name the sender, so you can leave the card unsigned and reveal yourself later.

Payment is online on the site by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay, and foreign bank cards are accepted via Robokassa, which is usually the main concern for customers ordering from abroad. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs the operator confirms the price when confirming the order.

Pyat Tsvetov has been making bouquets since 2011 in three own shops in Saint Petersburg - on Ilyushina Street, Obvodny Canal Embankment and Srednerogatskaya Street - and delivers across Russia. Browse the bouquets catalogue to choose a birthday bouquet, and if you need help with the choice or timing, call us at 8 (812) 507-67-05. We deliver bouquets across Russia in 1–2 hours.
