Colombian Roses: What to Know Before Sending a Bouquet

Colombian Roses: What to Know Before Sending a Bouquet

Colombian roses are roses grown in Colombia, rather than a single variety with a fixed colour, scent or flower shape. When choosing them, look at the named variety, the condition of the stems and the bouquet’s proportions: country of origin alone does not tell you how fragrant the flowers will be or how long they will last.

Customers asking about Colombian roses often want a substantial bouquet, but a photograph of a large bloom leaves several practical details unanswered. Stem length, how far the flowers have opened and the size of the recipient’s vase all affect the result at home. At Pyat Tsvetov (5 Flowers), established in 2011 with three own flower shops in Saint Petersburg, we suggest starting with the occasion and the recipient’s preferences, then checking the details of the bouquet you intend to order.

What the Colombian label tells you

Colombia is an important rose-growing country, and Colombian roses include many varieties with different petal arrangements, colours and opening habits. The label describes geographical origin; it does not identify one particular kind of rose. Two bouquets described as Colombian can therefore look quite different, even when they contain the same number of stems. Use the actual product description and images to judge the style, and clarify any essential detail before ordering.

Large heads and long stems are features people often associate with Colombian roses, but neither should be assumed for every bouquet. A taller stem needs a suitably supportive vase, while a broad flower head needs room beside neighbouring blooms. Fragrance also varies by variety, so a dramatic appearance does not establish that a rose will smell strongly. For a wider comparison of flowers from the country, see our guide to Colombian flowers.

Choose by condition, shape and the recipient’s space

When assessing roses in person, look for firm stems, reasonably fresh foliage and flower heads that sit upright without a sharply bent neck. Check for extensive browning, crushed petals or fuzzy growth, rather than judging freshness from colour alone. The outer guard petals can look rougher than the inner petals and do not automatically mean the flower is spoiled. A very tight bud is not proof of superior freshness either, because its ability to open depends on its stage of development and subsequent care.

Match the bouquet’s height and width to where it will stand. Long roses can suit a spacious entrance or a tall vase, while a more compact arrangement is easier to accommodate on a dining table or desk. A recipient receiving flowers at work may also need to carry them home, so sheer size can become an inconvenience. Browse the bouquets catalogue for the available designs, and check the listing rather than assuming that every rose shown has Colombian origin.

Rose colours and Russian gifting etiquette

Colour meanings are conventions, and the recipient’s taste should carry more weight than a rigid symbolism chart. Red roses commonly suggest romantic affection; pink can express warmth, gratitude or admiration, while white often suits a restrained, formal look. Yellow can feel cheerful, although some recipients associate it with separation. If you know that a colour has a personal meaning for the recipient, use that knowledge and make your intention clear in the card.

In Russia, an odd number of flowers is the customary choice for a celebratory bouquet, especially when individual stems are easy to count; even numbers are traditionally associated with mourning. This matters when selecting a simple bouquet of roses for a birthday, date or family celebration. For a colleague or a new acquaintance, a less overtly romantic colour may communicate your intention more comfortably. A short message naming the occasion helps the flowers feel appropriate, particularly when you are sending them from abroad.

Help Colombian roses settle into a vase

Prepare a clean vase before unwrapping the bouquet, and fill it with fresh water. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline, then trim the stem ends with a clean, sharp tool before placing the roses in the vase promptly. Follow the packet instructions if you use cut-flower food, since guessing the concentration can be counterproductive. Arrange the stems with enough space for the heads to open, and remove decorative wrapping if it restricts their position or makes the vase unstable.

Check the water daily and replenish it as needed; replace it when cloudy and wash the vase when you do. Keep the roses away from radiators, direct sun and ripening fruit, and avoid leaving them in a draught. Remove deteriorating leaves or flowers so they do not remain in contact with the rest of the bouquet. There is no dependable vase-life figure based on Colombian origin alone: variety, handling and conditions at home all matter, as explained in our guide to how long roses last in a vase.

Order roses to Russia with the right details

Start with the recipient’s city, full delivery address and a telephone number where the courier can reach them. If Colombian origin is essential to your choice, check that detail for the specific bouquet before placing the order; a colour or bouquet name does not establish origin. Include access information that will help the courier find the entrance, and write the card message exactly as you want it to appear. A card with your text is free, and delivery is anonymous by default: the courier does not name the sender.

We deliver flowers across Russia, with city delivery costing 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. Online checkout uses CloudPayments, and customers ordering from abroad should check the payment options displayed at checkout. Acceptance of every foreign card cannot be assumed. Consult delivery and payment information for the ordering details, or call 8 (812) 507-67-05 with questions about your order.

Plan arrival around the recipient’s day

Choose a delivery time when the recipient is likely to be at the address and able to put the flowers in water. In large cities, express delivery is available within 1–2 hours after the order is confirmed. Other options are delivery at an exact time with a tolerance of plus or minus 30 minutes, or the windows 09–12, 12–15, 15–18 and 18–21. You can also pre-order 1–30 days ahead; delivery around the clock applies specifically to Saint Petersburg.

The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, so a surprise bouquet still needs a reachable recipient. If they are absent, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with the sender’s consent, handing the flowers to a neighbour or concierge. For an office, restaurant or other venue, establish the recipient’s plans and any access restrictions before choosing the time. When ordering from another country, check the recipient city’s local time carefully so the selected slot matches the occasion.

Frequently asked questions

Are Colombian roses a particular rose variety?

No. Colombian describes where the roses were grown; the variety determines characteristics such as colour, petal shape and fragrance.

Do Colombian roses always have large blooms and long stems?

No; dimensions vary with the variety and the particular flowers offered. Check the bouquet description and clarify stem length or bloom size if either is essential to your choice.

How long will Colombian roses last in a vase?

Origin alone does not support a reliable number of days. The variety, condition on arrival and care at home all affect vase life, so use a clean vase, maintain fresh water and keep the bouquet away from heat.

Can I send roses to Russia while I am abroad?

We deliver across Russia, and online checkout uses CloudPayments. Check the options displayed at checkout, since acceptance of every foreign card is not guaranteed.

Will the recipient know who sent the roses?

Delivery is anonymous by default, and the courier does not name the sender. If you want the recipient to know, include your name in the free card message.
