Same-Day Flower Delivery: What Our Florists Tell Customers

Same-day flower delivery is possible in any large Russian city: after your order is confirmed, an express courier brings the bouquet within 1-2 hours. In Saint Petersburg, where our three shops are, we deliver around the clock, so even a late-evening order can reach the recipient the same night. City delivery costs 500 RUB, and the price for remote districts and suburbs is confirmed by the operator when the order is confirmed.

Pyat Tsvetov has been making bouquets in Saint Petersburg since 2011, and the questions about urgent orders have hardly changed in that time. People want to know whether the flowers will really arrive today, how to pay from another country, what happens if nobody opens the door and which flowers survive the trip best. This article collects the answers our florists give most often, in the order customers usually ask them.

Will the flowers really arrive today?

This is the first question at the counter and on the phone. The countdown starts when the operator confirms your order, so the quickest route is to fill in the address and recipient's phone completely, leaving nothing to clarify. Once the order is confirmed, express delivery in large cities takes 1-2 hours. If the occasion has a fixed moment, such as a birthday breakfast or the end of a working day, an exact time with a margin of plus or minus 30 minutes is a better choice than express.

For flexible plans there are four daily windows: 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 and 18-21. A window is useful when you know the recipient's routine only roughly, for example that she is usually home after six. You can also pre-order 1-30 days ahead and fix the time in advance, which we recommend before February 14 and March 8, when couriers' schedules fill up first.

Customers abroad should calculate the delivery time in the recipient's local time. Russia covers eleven time zones, and an order that looks like 'this afternoon' in London or Berlin may already be the evening in Novosibirsk. Our guide to same-day cut-off times across Russian time zones shows how to plan this.

Saint Petersburg: delivery at any hour

In Saint Petersburg the situation is simpler than anywhere else, because delivery here works around the clock. Bouquets are assembled in our own shops on Ilyushina Street, Obvodny Canal Embankment and Srednerogatskaya Street, so an order placed late at night or early in the morning is still delivered without waiting for the next day. Customers use this for surprises at midnight on a birthday, for flowers to meet someone off a night train, or simply because they live in a time zone where Petersburg evening is their morning.

For night deliveries we always advise warning a family member or flatmate, or at least making sure the recipient is expecting a call. The courier phones about 15 minutes before arrival, and an unknown number at 1 am is easy to ignore. Read more about how it works in our article on same-day flower delivery in Saint Petersburg.

Paying from abroad

Many of our urgent orders come from people living outside Russia, and the payment question comes right after the timing one. On the site you pay online by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay, and foreign bank cards are accepted: card payments go through Robokassa. That means you can order from the USA, Europe or Asia without asking relatives in Russia to pay for you.

Delivery within the city costs 500 RUB. If the address is in a remote district or a suburb, the operator names the delivery price when confirming the order, before anything is sent. All payment details are collected on the Delivery and payment page, and if something is unclear you can call us on 8 (812) 507-67-05.

Before paying, check three things that cause most delays on urgent orders: the full address with building, entrance and flat number, the intercom code if you know it, and the recipient's phone number with the +7 country code. A missing flat number or a phone that belongs to someone else can turn a one-hour delivery into a long search, while a complete order goes straight to the courier after confirmation.

Which bouquets handle urgent delivery best

Florists choose differently when they know a bouquet must travel within the hour and possibly wait a little before it reaches water. Spray roses, standard roses, chrysanthemums, alstroemeria and carnations are the most reliable: they keep their shape in the car and continue opening for several days. Eustoma looks delicate but is surprisingly hardy, which makes it a favourite for gentle, romantic bouquets.

Peonies, hydrangeas and ranunculus are spectacular, but they drink a lot and dislike waiting. We recommend them when the recipient is certainly at home. In Petersburg winters, with frost and wind off the Neva, the walk from the car to the entrance is short but real, and a well-wrapped bouquet copes with it easily; for long waits a flower box with a water-holding base is safer than a hand-tied bouquet.

When customers cannot decide, we suggest starting from the recipient rather than the flowers: her favourite colour, the style of her home, whether she prefers lush or minimal arrangements. With those three answers in mind, a few minutes in the bouquets catalogue are usually enough to find the right option, which matters when time is short.

When the recipient is not at home

About 15 minutes before arrival the courier calls the recipient, which gives them time to come down to the entrance, open the gate or tell the courier the intercom code. If the recipient does not answer or is away, the bouquet is not left on the doorstep. We agree a second delivery the same day, or, with the sender's consent, hand the flowers to a neighbour or concierge.

It saves time to decide this in advance and tell us when you order. Some senders are happy for the concierge to take the bouquet, others insist on personal handover. Delivery is anonymous by default, so the courier will not mention your name to the neighbour or to the recipient; your name appears only on the free card, if you sign it.

Keeping the bouquet fresh after it arrives

An urgent bouquet should still look good a week later, and most of that depends on the first ten minutes after delivery. Cut each stem by 1-2 cm at a sharp angle with a knife rather than scissors, strip off leaves that would sit in the water and put the flowers in a clean vase with cool water. Add flower food if a sachet came with the bouquet.

Change the water every day or two and recut the stems at the same time. Keep the vase away from radiators, which in Petersburg flats run hot all winter, and away from fruit, because ripening fruit speeds up wilting. Roses that drop their heads early can often be revived: recut the stems and stand them in deep cool water for a couple of hours.
