Why Cut Flowers Die Faster Than They Should
Before testing any additive, it helps to understand what is actually killing your flowers. The moment a stem is cut, two processes begin simultaneously: the stem starts drawing water through its vascular tissue, and bacteria begin colonising the cut end and the water itself. As bacterial populations grow, they physically block the tiny channels through which water travels upward. The flower head stops receiving water even though it is sitting in a full vase. This is why a rose can look fine at noon and be drooping by evening — not because it ran out of water, but because it can no longer reach it. Temperature accelerates both processes. A bouquet sitting on a sunny windowsill at 24–26 degrees Celsius will exhaust itself in two days. The same bouquet kept in a room at 16–18 degrees, away from direct sun and ripening fruit, can last five to seven days or longer depending on variety. Ethylene gas released by fruit is a genuine enemy of flowers, particularly for tulips, carnations, and alstroemeria, which are sensitive even at low concentrations. Hardier varieties like chrysanthemums and statice tolerate it better. Understanding these two threats — bacterial blockage and ethylene — is the frame through which every home remedy should be judged. An additive that addresses neither of these problems is simply folklore, however confidently it is repeated.

Aspirin contains acetylsalicylic acid, and the theory is that it lowers the pH of the water, creating a mildly acidic environment that slows bacterial growth and helps water move up the stem more efficiently. Both of those effects are real. The question is whether a standard 500 mg tablet dissolved in one litre of water delivers enough acid to matter. In practice, the pH shift is measurable but modest. Studies run by horticultural researchers — and repeated informally by florists — show that aspirin does extend vase life compared to plain tap water, but the effect is smaller than commercial flower food and smaller than simply changing the water every two days. For roses, which are among the most pH-sensitive cut flowers, a very light aspirin solution can add roughly half a day to vase life under controlled conditions. For sturdier varieties like spray chrysanthemums or alstroemeria, the difference is barely detectable. The mistake people make is using too much aspirin. Two or three tablets in a small vase actually damages stem tissue because the acid concentration becomes too high. One tablet per litre is the ceiling, and even then you need to change the water every two days because aspirin does not prevent bacterial growth, it only slows it slightly. If you have aspirin and nothing else, it is worth using. If you have the choice between aspirin and recutting the stems under running water every other day, choose the recut — that single action does more than any additive.
Sugar: Fuel for the Flower, Food for the Bacteria
Sugar is the additive with the most complicated profile. Cut flowers genuinely need carbohydrates. In a living plant, leaves produce sugars through photosynthesis and send them down to the roots and up to the blooms. Once a stem is cut, that supply stops. Adding sugar to the vase water does feed the flower, and you can see the effect clearly with flowers that arrive in tight bud — a teaspoon of sugar per litre of water encourages buds to open more fully and petals to develop better colour. This is why commercial flower food sachets, the small packets that come with supermarket bouquets, contain sugar as one of their main ingredients. The problem is that sugar feeds bacteria just as effectively as it feeds flowers. A vase with sugared water left unchanged for three days will turn cloudy and smell unpleasant, and the bacterial load will block stems far faster than plain water would. The net effect can be negative. The professional solution is to combine sugar with an acidifier and a biocide — which is exactly what commercial sachets do. At home, if you want to use sugar, keep the concentration low, around half a teaspoon per litre, change the water every day, recut stems each time, and keep the vase clean. Tulips respond well to very light sugar solutions. Roses and gerberas are more vulnerable to bacterial blockage, so sugar without daily water changes is risky. Lilies and chrysanthemums sit somewhere in the middle.
Vodka, Bleach and Copper Coins: Sorting the Antimicrobials
The logic behind vodka, household bleach, and copper coins is the same: kill or suppress the bacteria that block stems. The approaches differ wildly in effectiveness. Vodka at the concentrations people actually use — a capful in a vase — delivers an alcohol level of perhaps one or two percent in the water. That is not enough to meaningfully inhibit bacterial growth. You would need a concentration that would simultaneously damage the flower's own cells. Vodka is essentially inert at practical doses, and the flowers neither benefit nor suffer noticeably. Bleach is a different story. A single drop of standard household bleach per litre of water — and we mean one drop, not a splash — does measurably reduce bacterial populations without harming most cut flowers. Florists in several European countries have used dilute bleach solutions for decades. The risk is overdosing: even two or three drops per litre will bleach petal edges on white roses and cause stem tissue damage in delicate varieties like sweet peas or anemones. Sturdier flowers like chrysanthemums and carnations tolerate it better. Copper coins are a persistent myth. The idea that copper ions leach into the water and act as an antimicrobial is theoretically possible, but modern coins contain very little actual copper, and the ion release into cold water over the timescale of a vase life is negligible. Independent testing has not shown a reliable vase-life extension from copper coins. Skip them. If you want an antimicrobial, one drop of bleach per litre is the option with real evidence behind it.
What Actually Works: The Non-Chemical Interventions
The honest conclusion from testing all these additives is that none of them outperform basic physical care. Recutting stems is the single most effective intervention available to anyone with a kitchen and a pair of scissors. When a stem sits in water, the cut end seals over within hours as cells dry and bacteria accumulate. A fresh diagonal cut — made under running water if possible, or at least with a clean blade — reopens the vascular tissue immediately. For roses, which are particularly prone to air embolism in the stem, cutting two to three centimetres off the stem every two days extends vase life more than any additive we have tested. Water temperature matters more than most people expect. Flowers take up cool water more efficiently than warm water, and cool water also slows bacterial growth. Aim for water that is around 15 degrees Celsius — roughly what comes from a cold tap after running for a few seconds. The exception is tulips, which prefer water at around 10 degrees, and tropical varieties like anthuriums or birds of paradise, which should never be kept in cold water as it causes cell damage. Removing leaves that sit below the waterline is not optional maintenance — it is essential. Submerged foliage rots within a day and dramatically increases bacterial load. Strip every leaf that would touch the water, even if it means the arrangement looks slightly sparse below the rim. This one step alone can add a full day to the life of a mixed bouquet.
How to Combine Remedies Without Making Things Worse
The worst outcomes we see come from people combining multiple remedies without thinking about interactions. A vase with sugar, aspirin, a copper coin, and a splash of vodka is not four times better than plain water — it is often worse, because the sugar is feeding bacteria that the other ingredients cannot suppress, while the aspirin is acidifying an already complicated chemical environment. If you want to use home remedies, pick one and use it correctly rather than layering several together. The most reliable home combination is a very small amount of sugar — half a teaspoon per litre — with one drop of bleach per litre. This mimics the basic formula of commercial flower food: carbohydrate for the flower, antimicrobial for the water. Change this solution every two days, recut stems each time, and keep the vase itself clean by rinsing it with hot water before refilling. Commercial flower food sachets, when available, outperform all home combinations because they are formulated with precise ratios and often include a pH buffer that home remedies lack. If a sachet came with your bouquet, use it as directed and do not add anything else to the water. For specific varieties: roses benefit most from clean water and frequent stem recutting; tulips want cool water and minimal additives; gerberas are prone to stem rot and need water changed daily regardless of what is in it; chrysanthemums are the most forgiving and will tolerate a wider range of conditions than almost any other cut flower sold in Russia.
