Krasnokamensk, Russia: A Practical Guide for Friends and Family Abroad
Krasnokamensk is a town of around 50,000 people in Zabaykalsky Krai in south-eastern Siberia, close to the borders with China and Mongolia and roughly 500 km from the regional capital, Chita. It was built from the late 1960s around large uranium deposits and is still known as the home of one of Russia's main uranium mining enterprises. Local time is UTC+9, six hours ahead of Moscow.
People abroad usually search for Krasnokamensk for one of two reasons: they grew up there and left, or someone close to them lives or works there now. In our shop we hear from both, mostly when a birthday, an anniversary or a family date is coming up. This guide covers what is useful to know about the town and how to get a bouquet to someone there on the right day. If you meant Krasnokamsk, the town near Perm in the Urals, see our separate guide to sending flowers to Krasnokamsk from abroad; the names are easy to confuse.
Where Krasnokamensk is and how the town came about
Krasnokamensk lies in the far south-east of Zabaykalsky Krai, on the open Dauria steppe, not far from the Argun River, which marks the border with China. The landscape is wide, dry and treeless for long stretches, with low hills and big skies, very different from the taiga most people imagine when they think of Siberia. The town is linked by a branch railway to the main line towards Chita, and most journeys from western Russia go via Chita.
The town was planned and built as a single project in the late 1960s, when geologists confirmed large uranium reserves nearby, and received town status in 1969. Much of the centre consists of numbered microdistricts of Soviet apartment blocks, which matters when you write an address: residents often give the microdistrict and building number rather than a street name. Mining and processing still shape local life, and many families have several generations working in the industry.
For a sender abroad, the practical point is distance. Krasnokamensk is a long way from any other city, so everything that reaches the town, flowers included, has to be planned with a little more time than an order to Moscow or St Petersburg.
Time zone, climate and what they mean for a bouquet
Zabaykalsky Krai is on UTC+9 all year, with no summer time. When it is 9 am in Krasnokamensk, it is 3 am in Moscow, midnight in London in winter and 1 am in London in summer. A delivery slot of 09-12 local time is therefore the middle of the night for most senders in Europe. Choose the slot in terms of the recipient's day, and check the date as well: an order placed on your evening may already fall on the next calendar day in Krasnokamensk.
The climate is sharply continental. Winters are long, dry and very cold, with frosts below minus 30 degrees common in January, while summers are short, sunny and can be hot. For flowers, frost is the main risk: a bouquet left for even a few minutes on a doorstep in deep cold can be damaged beyond saving. Petals turn translucent and dark within hours of thawing, even if they looked fine at first.
This is why the recipient's phone number matters so much in winter. Our courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, which gives them time to be at the door, so the bouquet goes straight from the wrapped package into a warm flat. Once inside, let the flowers sit in their wrapping for 20-30 minutes before unpacking, so they warm up gradually, then trim the stems and put them in room-temperature water.
Bouquets we can deliver
How to order flowers to Krasnokamensk with us
Pyat Tsvetov has been a florist in St Petersburg since 2011, and we deliver flowers across Russia. Choose a bouquet in our catalogue, enter the recipient's address and phone number, add the card text and pay online on the site by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay. Foreign bank cards are accepted, with payment via Robokassa, so you can order from abroad without asking relatives in Russia to pay for you.
City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs the operator confirms the price when confirming the order. Express delivery within 1-2 hours is available in large cities, so for a town as distant as Krasnokamensk the sensible approach is to pre-order: you can book 1 to 30 days ahead and choose either one of the windows 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21 or an exact time within 30 minutes. If you are unsure about the address format, the delivery options for a particular microdistrict or the timing, call us on 8 (812) 507-67-05 before ordering. Full terms are on the delivery and payment page.
Delivery is anonymous by default and the courier does not name the sender. A card with your text is free, so sign it if you want the recipient to know who remembered. If nobody is at home when the courier arrives, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with your consent, leave the flowers with a neighbour or concierge.
Dates and occasions worth remembering
Besides birthdays and the big national dates, 8 March and New Year, a mining town has its own calendar. Miner's Day, on the last Sunday of August, is a real holiday in Krasnokamensk, with family gatherings and events in town. The Day of Nuclear Industry Workers on 28 September is also widely marked by people in the industry. A bouquet on one of these days for a father, grandfather or partner who has spent years at the mine or the processing plant is an unusual gesture, and one that is remembered.
Work anniversaries and retirements matter here too, since many people spend their whole career at one enterprise. If you are sending flowers to a colleague or a long-serving relative, our article on flowers for a Russian colleague's work anniversary explains what is appropriate and how much to say on the card.
School dates are another occasion families abroad often miss. On 1 September, the start of the school year, children traditionally bring flowers to their teachers, and grandparents in Krasnokamensk are often delighted to receive a bouquet on the day a grandchild starts first grade.
Choosing flowers for a steppe town
Choose flowers that tolerate dry indoor air and temperature changes. Roses, chrysanthemums, alstroemeria, carnations and eustoma are reliable choices in winter: they cope with a short trip through the cold and with heated flats, where humidity can be very low. Tulips and other bulb flowers are beautiful in spring but more delicate on a long, cold day.
In summer the problem reverses: heat and bright sun. Ask the recipient to keep the bouquet away from south-facing windows, change the water daily and add a little cool water in the afternoon. Bouquets with greenery such as eucalyptus or pistachio hold up well in a dry climate and keep their shape longer.
Keep the Russian etiquette in mind as well: small bouquets are given with an odd number of stems, since even numbers are for mourning, and yellow flowers are fine in a modern bouquet despite the old superstition. For older relatives, classic roses or chrysanthemums in warm colours are always a safe and welcome choice.
