White Lilies: What They Mean and How to Give Them in Russia
White lilies are large, trumpet- or star-shaped flowers, most often Oriental, Longiflorum or LA hybrids, that symbolise purity, renewal and respect. In a vase they last 10 to 14 days because the buds open one by one, and they suit weddings, anniversaries, congratulations to older women and memorial occasions alike. The main things to know before buying are how strong the scent is, how to deal with the pollen and in which situations white flowers read correctly in Russia.
In our shops in Saint Petersburg, open since 2011, white lilies are among the flowers customers ask about most, and the questions repeat: will the smell be too strong for a small flat, why do the buds stay closed, how many stems look generous, and is white appropriate for a birthday. This guide collects the answers our florists give at the counter, along with what to keep in mind when you order a lily bouquet from abroad.
Which white lilies you will actually see in a bouquet
The variety customers usually picture is the white Oriental lily, with wide recurved petals, a slight wave at the edges and a heavy, sweet perfume. Casa Blanca is the classic name, and Siberia is another pure white Oriental that florists use widely. These have the biggest flowers, often 15 to 20 cm across, and the strongest scent, so they make a dramatic statement in a tall vase or a large bouquet.
Longiflorum lilies, sometimes called Easter or trumpet lilies, have long narrow white trumpets that face sideways. They look cleaner and more architectural, and their scent is lighter. LA hybrids, a cross between Longiflorum and Asiatic lilies, give upward-facing, slightly smaller white flowers with very little fragrance, which makes them the sensible option for offices, hospitals and anyone who dislikes strong smells.
Calla lilies are a different plant altogether, even though they share the name and are often requested together with lilies. Their smooth single funnel works beautifully in minimalist and wedding arrangements; we cover them separately in calla lilies in Russia: varieties and vase care. What white lilies mean, and when white is right in Russia
In the European tradition the white lily stands for purity and innocence, and in Christian art it is the flower of the Annunciation. In Russia these associations are familiar, but in practice people read a white lily bouquet more simply: as elegant, solemn and respectful. That is why it is a frequent choice for a bride, for a mother on a big anniversary, for a teacher on the first of September or for thanking a doctor.
Customers from abroad sometimes worry that white flowers are only for funerals in Russia. That is not the case: white roses, chrysanthemums and lilies are given for weddings, births and birthdays all the time. What matters more is the composition. A white lily bouquet with greenery and pale pink or cream accents, tied with a light ribbon, reads as festive; an all-white arrangement with dark ribbon and an even number of stems reads as mourning. Our article on white flowers in Russia and when they are welcome goes through the common situations.
The number of stems follows the general rule: odd numbers for happy occasions, even for memorials. With lilies this matters less than with roses, because each stem carries three to six buds, so even three stems already look generous. Five to seven stems make a substantial bouquet for a jubilee or wedding, and a single stem of Oriental lily with greenery is enough as a modest token of thanks.

Scent and pollen: the two questions everyone asks
Oriental white lilies have one of the strongest scents among cut flowers, and in a small, warm room it can feel overwhelming, especially in the evening when the fragrance intensifies. For a bedroom, a hospital ward, a small office or a person with sensitivity to smells, choose Longiflorum or LA hybrids, or mix one or two Oriental stems with unscented flowers such as roses, eustoma and chrysanthemums. If the scent turns out to be too much, moving the vase to a hallway or a cooler room softens it noticeably.
The orange pollen on the anthers stains petals, tablecloths, clothes and skin, and on fabric it is hard to remove. Our florists recommend removing the anthers as each flower opens: pinch them off with a paper tissue, without touching the pollen with your fingers. This does not shorten the life of the flower and keeps the white petals clean. If pollen does fall on fabric, do not rub it with water; lift it off with sticky tape first, then wash.
One more practical warning concerns pets. All parts of true lilies, including the pollen and the vase water, are toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure even in small amounts. If the recipient has a cat, it is better to choose calla lilies, roses or chrysanthemums instead, and our florists can suggest a similar white composition without lilies.
Caring for white lilies at home
Lilies usually arrive with most buds still closed, and this is intentional: a bouquet with only open flowers would be past its best in four or five days. Cut 2 to 3 cm off each stem at an angle with a sharp knife, remove leaves that would sit below the water and place the stems in a clean, tall vase with cool water and flower food. Lilies are top-heavy once open, so a vase with a heavy base or narrow neck prevents tipping.
Change the water every two days and trim the stems a little each time. As the lower flowers fade, snap them off at the base of the flower stalk; this keeps the bouquet tidy and directs water to the buds still opening. Keep the vase away from radiators, direct sun and fruit bowls, since warmth and the ethylene from ripening fruit make lilies open and fade faster.
Customers often ask why some buds never open. Small green buds at the top of the stem sometimes lack the energy to develop in a vase, which is normal. Plump buds with a white or cream tint will open within a few days; a warmer room speeds them up if you need the flowers open for a particular evening, and a cooler room slows everything down if you want the bouquet to last longer.

Frequently asked questions
What do white lilies symbolise?
White lilies traditionally symbolise purity, renewal and respect. In Russia they are seen as elegant and solemn, suitable for weddings, anniversaries, thanks to teachers and doctors, and also memorial occasions.
Are white lilies only for funerals in Russia?
No. White lilies are widely given for weddings, birthdays and jubilees. A festive look comes from light accents, greenery and an odd number of stems, while an even number with dark ribbon signals mourning.
How long do white lilies last in a vase?
Usually 10 to 14 days, because the buds open gradually. Fresh water every two days, a fresh cut and removing faded flowers keep the bouquet looking good longer.
Which white lilies have the least scent?
LA hybrids have almost no fragrance and Longiflorum lilies have a light one. White Oriental lilies such as Casa Blanca are the most strongly scented.
Are lilies safe if the recipient has a cat?
No, true lilies are highly toxic to cats, including the pollen and the vase water. Choose calla lilies, roses or chrysanthemums for a home with cats.
