Anonymous Flowers: Sending a Bouquet in Russia Without Giving Your Name
Anonymous flowers are a bouquet delivered without the sender's name: the recipient gets the flowers and a card, and nothing else that identifies you. At Pyat Tsvetov every delivery works this way by default - the courier does not name the sender, and the card says only what you write on it.
We have run flower shops in Saint Petersburg since 2011, and "Will they find out it was me?" is one of the questions we hear most often at the counter and on the phone. This article collects our answers: what happens at the door, how to keep the card neutral, which flowers suit a secret gift, and how to order from abroad.
The questions customers ask first
The first question is almost always about the courier. Our couriers do not name the sender and do not pass on any order details that could point to you. When a recipient asks who sent the bouquet, the courier answers that the sender chose not to say, and that is the end of it.
The second question is about the phone call. The courier needs the recipient's number and calls about 15 minutes before arrival, simply to make sure someone is home. During the call the courier says there is a flower delivery and asks the recipient to be at the door - your name is not mentioned. This short call is what makes a smooth handover possible, so we always ask for a working number.
The third question is what happens if nobody opens the door. In that case we agree a second delivery the same day, or, if you give your consent, we leave the bouquet with a neighbour or the concierge. The anonymity rules stay the same for whoever receives the flowers.
What the recipient actually sees
The recipient sees a courier, a bouquet and a small card in an envelope. The bouquet is wrapped and ready to put in water; the card carries your text or stays unsigned. A card with your message is free, so you can decide between total mystery, a hint, an initial or a full signature right up to the moment of ordering.
Many customers ask us to leave the card out altogether. We advise against it: a bouquet with no card at all sometimes makes people think it was delivered to the wrong flat. A single line such as "For you, with admiration" removes that doubt without revealing anything.
We describe the handover step by step in a separate article, what the recipient actually sees, which is useful if you want to picture the moment before you order.
Another frequent request is for the courier to say a few words on your behalf, such as "This is from someone who cares about you." We recommend putting such words on the card instead. A written line reads as intended, while a message passed on verbally at the door can sound odd or be forgotten in the moment.

Wording a card that keeps the secret
Most anonymous gifts are given away by the card, not by the delivery. Customers often want to add a personal touch and end up writing a pet name, a quote from a shared film or a reference to last weekend - and the recipient guesses within a minute. If you want to stay unknown, write something any admirer could have written.
Lines that work well in our experience: "Because today should start with flowers." "From someone who thinks you are wonderful." "Happy birthday - guess who." For gratitude: "Thank you for everything you do - from a grateful patient." Short, kind and without details is the rule.
If the recipient reads Russian better than English, send the text in Russian and it goes on the card exactly as you wrote it. You can also combine both languages: a line in Russian for the recipient and an English signature such as "Your secret admirer" adds a little intrigue.
Flowers that suit a secret gift
From the shop side, the bouquets most often chosen for anonymous delivery are medium-sized and soft in colour: pink and cream roses, eustoma, spray roses, hydrangea, and in spring tulips and peonies. They look generous but not overwhelming, which matters when the recipient does not know who is behind the gift.
Remember the Russian custom of odd numbers. For a gift to a living person, a mono-bouquet should contain an odd number of stems; even numbers are for funerals. In large mixed bouquets the count is not visible and nobody checks, but for 5, 7 or 11 roses it matters, especially if the recipient is older.
For an office delivery choose a box or basket arrangement: it does not need a vase and stands neatly on a desk. For a home delivery late in the evening, a classic wrapped bouquet is the most romantic option. You can see current bouquets in our catalogue.
Think about how the flowers will be looked after once the courier has gone. If the recipient may not have a vase at home, a box arrangement is the kinder choice. If you know they love fresh flowers, a wrapped bouquet of roses or chrysanthemums will last well when the stems are trimmed and the water changed every day or two.
Timing a surprise, including late at night in Saint Petersburg
For anonymous gifts timing does a lot of the work. You can choose express delivery in large cities within 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed, an exact time with a margin of plus or minus 30 minutes, a window of 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21, or a pre-order 1-30 days ahead. For birthdays and anniversaries we recommend pre-ordering so the date is fixed well in advance.
In Saint Petersburg we deliver around the clock, which customers use for very particular surprises: flowers at midnight on a birthday, a bouquet waiting at the door before the recipient leaves for work, or a delivery right after a late shift. In other cities choose one of the daytime windows above.
Avoid timings that point straight at you. If you were the only person who knew the recipient would be home on Thursday afternoon, a Thursday afternoon delivery is a clue. A neutral morning window is usually the safest choice.
Ordering anonymous flowers from abroad
Ordering from another country is done entirely online. Choose a bouquet, enter the recipient's name, address and phone number, add your card text, select the delivery time and pay on the site by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay. Foreign bank cards are accepted, with payment processed via Robokassa.
City delivery costs 500 RUB. For remote districts and suburbs the operator confirms the delivery price when confirming the order. Full conditions are on the delivery and payment page; for questions about a specific address or card wording, call us on 8 (812) 507-67-05.
If you are planning a series of gestures, read our guide on keeping the surprise without the stress. One more practical note: tell nobody in the recipient's circle about the order. In our experience, more secrets are revealed by well-meaning friends than by anything at the door.
