"Recipient Missed Delivery": What It Means and What Happens Next

"Recipient missed delivery" means the courier arrived at the address but could not hand the order to the recipient: nobody opened the door, the phone was not answered, or the person was away. It is not a cancellation; it means a delivery attempt was made and the next step has to be agreed. With flowers the next step needs to happen quickly, because a bouquet cannot sit in a warehouse for a week like a parcel.

At Pyat Tsvetov we have delivered bouquets in Saint Petersburg since 2011, and customers who send flowers from abroad regularly ask us what exactly happens when the recipient is out. Below is how a missed delivery works with us, why it happens most often and how to set up an order so that it does not.

What customers usually ask when they see this status

The first question is almost always whether the flowers have been lost. They have not: a missed delivery simply means the handover did not happen at the moment of the visit. For parcels, carriers usually leave a notice and try again on another day or send the item to a pickup point. For fresh flowers that approach does not work, so the procedure is different and much faster.

The second question is who is at fault. In most cases nobody: the recipient stepped out for ten minutes, was in the shower, did not hear the intercom or did not recognise an unknown number. Sometimes the address lacks a flat number or an entrance, and the courier could not reach the door at all.

The third question is whether the sender needs to do anything. Usually you only need to confirm which option suits you: another attempt the same day or leaving the bouquet with someone nearby. Questions can be settled by phone on 8 (812) 507-67-05.

How a missed flower delivery is handled with us

About 15 minutes before arrival, our courier calls the recipient. This call is the main way to avoid a missed delivery: it gives the person time to come home, go down to the entrance or tell the courier how to get in. If the call goes unanswered and nobody opens the door, the delivery counts as missed.

In that case we agree a second delivery on the same day, at a time when the recipient will be in. As an alternative, and only with the sender's consent, the bouquet can be handed to a neighbour or a concierge. Those are the two options; a bouquet left on a doorstep or hung on a door handle is a poor idea in any season: in summer it wilts, in winter it freezes, and in a shared stairwell it can simply disappear.

Why deliveries get missed most often

From our experience, the most common reason is an incomplete address. In Saint Petersburg many buildings have several entrances from a courtyard, and a missing entrance number or flat number can cost a lot of time. If you are not sure of the flat number, read Missing Apartment Number: How We Still Deliver Your Flowers.

The second reason is the phone. People who receive surprise flowers often do not expect a call and ignore unfamiliar numbers, especially older relatives. A wrong digit in the number makes the courier's advance call impossible, and the delivery becomes a guessing game at the door.

The third reason is timing. A bouquet sent to a home address at midday, when the recipient is at work, is likely to be missed. An office address during working hours or a home address in the evening is far more reliable.

A fourth, smaller reason is the intercom. In older Saint Petersburg buildings the intercom may be broken or connected to only some flats, and the recipient simply does not hear the courier. If you know this is the case, write it in the comment and ask the recipient to keep the phone close; a call is then the only reliable way to meet at the entrance.

How to prevent a missed delivery when ordering

Give the full address: street, building, entrance, floor, flat and intercom code if you know it. Add the recipient's correct phone number, and if the gift is a surprise, consider warning a family member that a courier may call. A note in the order comment about the best way to enter the building saves time for everyone.

Choose the time deliberately. You can book an exact time with an accuracy of about 30 minutes, a time window (09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21), or pre-order 1-30 days ahead. In large cities express delivery takes 1-2 hours after confirmation, which helps if you know the recipient is at home right now. In Saint Petersburg we deliver around the clock, so an early morning or late evening slot is also possible.

If you order from abroad, check the current time in Russia before picking a slot. Payment is online by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay, and foreign bank cards are accepted through Robokassa, so you can arrange everything without anyone in Russia paying on your behalf.

Surprise, anonymity and the missed delivery

Delivery is anonymous by default: the courier does not name the sender. This is pleasant for a surprise, but it also means a suspicious recipient may refuse to open the door to an unexpected visitor. A clear card helps; a card with your text is free, and even a hint such as a nickname makes the recipient more willing to accept the bouquet.

If the recipient lives with family, the safest way to keep a surprise is to involve one person in the household. They can make sure someone is at home at the agreed time without revealing who the flowers are from. For elderly parents, we recommend a daytime slot when they are usually at home and awake.

When the bouquet is finally handed over after a second attempt, it still looks its best: a few extra hours rarely matter to well-prepared flowers. The recipient only needs to trim the stems, put them in cool water and keep the vase away from radiators.

Some senders worry that a second attempt will spoil the impression. In practice recipients rarely notice anything except the flowers themselves: what they remember is the bouquet, the card and the fact that someone thought of them. A missed first attempt becomes a minor detail once the flowers are in a vase.

Cost and practical details

City delivery costs 500 RUB. For remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the price when confirming the order, so if the recipient lives outside the centre, this is a good moment to double-check the address as well.

All the conditions of delivery and payment are collected on our Delivery and payment page. If anything about a missed delivery is unclear, or you want to agree a second attempt or a handover to a neighbour, call us on 8 (812) 507-67-05.
