Mail Order Flowers: Ordering a Bouquet to Russia From Abroad

Mail order flowers no longer means fresh stems posted in a box. Today it means ordering a bouquet remotely, online or by phone, and having it made up and handed over by a courier in the recipient's city, usually the same day. Fresh flowers sent through the post spend days without water in changing temperatures, so florists do not ship them that way.

At Pyat Tsvetov we have run flower shops in Saint Petersburg since 2011, and a large share of our orders come from people who live abroad and order for parents, friends and colleagues in Russia. The questions they ask at the counter or on the phone are remarkably consistent, so this guide follows them in order: what you actually receive, how timing and payment work from another country, and how to make sure the bouquet arrives the way you pictured it.

Why bouquets travel by courier, not by post

Customers sometimes ask whether we can post a bouquet to another country, or whether a boxed bouquet sent by mail would arrive fresh. The honest answer is that cut flowers lose quality quickly without water and stable temperature. A rose that sits in a parcel for three days in a heated sorting centre arrives with bruised petals and a dried stem, and it will not recover in a vase. Courier delivery from a working flower shop avoids all of that.

When you place a mail order with us, the bouquet is assembled shortly before delivery, wrapped to protect it from wind and frost, and taken by car directly to the address. Between the workroom and the recipient's hands there are hours, not days. In winter this matters even more, because flowers carried through Saint Petersburg frost need proper wrapping and the shortest possible time outdoors.

So when you search for mail order flowers, look for a shop that makes and delivers the bouquet in the recipient's city rather than a service that ships boxes. That single difference decides how long the flowers last after they arrive. Our article on ordering flowers online for delivery in Russia goes through the practical checklist in more detail.

Timing: same day, a set window or weeks ahead

The most common question from abroad is how quickly a bouquet can be delivered. In large cities, express delivery arrives 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed. If the day matters more than the hour, choose a time window: 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21. If the moment itself matters, for a proposal or a surprise at the door, you can ask for an exact time with a margin of plus or minus 30 minutes.

For birthdays, anniversaries and holidays such as 8 March, pre-ordering is the calmer option. You can place an order 1-30 days ahead, which helps when you are in a different time zone and want everything settled before the day starts in Russia. In Saint Petersburg our delivery runs around the clock, so a late-evening or early-morning delivery in the city is possible.

Keep the time difference in mind when you choose a window. A morning slot in Saint Petersburg may be the middle of the night where you live, so it is easier to place the order the evening before and simply wait for the confirmation.

Paying from another country

People ordering from abroad are usually worried about payment, and for good reason, because many Russian sites do not accept foreign cards. We do: foreign bank cards are accepted, with payment processed through Robokassa. Customers in Russia can also pay online with a bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay. All payment happens on the site when you place the order.

Delivery within the city costs 500 RUB. For remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the delivery price when confirming the order, so you know the final amount before anything is sent. If you need a receipt or documents for the payment, our note on receipts and invoices for flower orders explains what you can request.

If a payment does not go through, do not place the same order again several times. Call us on 8 (812) 507-67-05 and we will check whether the order and the payment have been registered, which avoids duplicate bouquets arriving at the same door.

What the recipient experiences at the door

About 15 minutes before arrival, the courier calls the recipient to make sure someone is home. This is worth mentioning to anyone who does not answer unknown numbers, especially older relatives, although for a surprise you may prefer to say nothing and let the call do its job. Delivery is anonymous by default: the courier does not name the sender unless you write your name on the card.

The card with your text is free. Write it the way you would speak, in Russian if the recipient reads Russian, or in English if that is your shared language. Short cards work best; three or four lines that sound like you are better than a long formal message. If the recipient is not at home, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with your consent, leave the flowers with a neighbour or a concierge.

Hotels, offices and hospitals each have their own rules about receiving deliveries. If the bouquet is going to a hotel, read our guide to birthday flowers delivered to a hotel, which covers names on the booking and reception desks.

Choosing a bouquet you have not seen in person

Ordering by photo is the part that makes people hesitate most. The practical approach is to choose by flower type and colour rather than by exact arrangement, because each bouquet is assembled by hand and the stems available on the day may differ slightly in shade or bud size. Roses, chrysanthemums, alstroemeria and seasonal flowers like tulips in spring each have a predictable character, so start there in the bouquets catalogue.

For an older recipient, a medium bouquet that fits a normal household vase is more welcome than a very large one. For a colleague or a business contact, restrained colours such as white, cream and soft green feel appropriate in Russia. For a partner or close family, bright and generous is fine. Remember that Russian custom favours odd numbers of flowers in a gift, since even numbers are associated with funerals.

Think about the vase life too. Bouquets with roses, carnations and chrysanthemums last a week or more with daily water changes, while very delicate seasonal flowers may give four or five days. A short care note on the card, reminding the recipient to change the water and trim the stems, makes the bouquet last noticeably longer.

Practical checklist before you confirm

Check the full address, including the entrance number, floor, flat and any door code; Saint Petersburg courtyards and old buildings can be hard to find without them. Give the recipient's phone number with the Russian code, since the courier will call before arriving. If you are planning a surprise, tell us so that the courier does not ask the recipient awkward questions.

Make sure the time window matches the recipient's day, not yours. If the bouquet is for a workplace, choose hours when the person is actually in the office. For a group gift, it helps to have one person place the order and collect everyone's names for the card; agree in advance who signs and what the card says.

Delivery terms are summarised on the delivery and payment page. For anything unusual, an exact time, an unusual address or a question about the card, call 8 (812) 507-67-05. We have three of our own shops in Saint Petersburg, on Ilyushina Street, the Obvodny Canal Embankment and Srednerogatskaya Street, and the team that takes the call is the team that makes the bouquet.

Frequently asked questions

Can fresh flowers be sent by post?

Yes, foreign bank cards are accepted and the payment goes through Robokassa. Customers in Russia can also pay with a bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay on the site.
