What Flower Arrangement to Send to a Business Associate's Office Opening
For the office opening of a company you work with, the appropriate choice is a structured, long-lasting arrangement that stands on its own: a box or basket composition or a tall vase-ready design in restrained colours, with no need for the hosts to find a vase. It should arrive in the morning before guests come and carry a card with your company's name and a short line of congratulations. Bright single-colour bouquets in white, green, blue or the company's corporate colours work best; romantic red roses and anything funereal in tone do not.
In our Saint Petersburg shops we get this request almost every week, usually from managers abroad who want to congratulate a Russian counterpart but are unsure about local customs. The questions are always similar: how big, which flowers, what to write and when it should arrive. Below are the answers we give at the counter, based on what actually works in Russian offices.
Choose a format that suits an office, not a home
The most practical format for an opening is an arrangement in a box, a basket or a hat box with floral foam. It stands on a reception desk or a windowsill without a vase, survives being moved around during the event and lasts a week or longer with a little water added to the foam. Hosts at an opening are busy, and a classic hand-tied bouquet often ends up in a bucket in the kitchen because nobody has time to look for a vase.
Size should match the space and your relationship. For a small office or a first contact, a medium box arrangement reads as polite and professional. For a key client or long-standing counterpart, a flagship showroom or a large reception area, a tall arrangement or a basket that is visible from the entrance is appropriate. Avoid anything so large that it blocks a doorway or the reception counter: the hosts will have to move it, and that is the opposite of a good impression.
Potted plants such as orchids are also accepted in Russian business culture and suit companies that prefer something lasting. A white phalaenopsis in a simple ceramic pot looks good in any interior and works well when you are not sure of the office style. For a broader overview of formats, see our article on flowers for a Russian office opening.
Flowers and colours that send the right message
Customers often ask which flowers are 'businesslike'. Roses, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas, lisianthus, alstroemeria, carnations, orchids and green elements such as eucalyptus and pistachio leaves all look professional and hold up well in a warm office. Lilies are impressive but have a strong scent, which can be too much in a closed meeting room, so we usually suggest them only for large, airy spaces.
Colour carries more weight than the variety. White and green look clean and confident; blue, white and silver tones match many corporate identities; yellow and orange read as energetic and suit a start-up or a retail opening. If you know the company's brand colours, matching them is a thoughtful touch that people notice. Red roses are best avoided, because in Russia they carry a romantic meaning, especially if the recipient is a woman.
Russian etiquette also has the rule about odd numbers: an even number of stems is associated with funerals. In large box or basket arrangements nobody counts, but for a small mono-bouquet of roses or chrysanthemums keep the number odd. Black or very dark wrapping, and arrangements that look like wreaths, are out of place at a celebration.
Bouquets we can deliver
What to write on the card
The card is what turns flowers into a business gesture, so it deserves a minute of thought. Include your company name and, if appropriate, the name of the person sending, then a short congratulation on the new office and a wish for growth or successful work in the new place. Two or three lines are enough. A card with your text is included free, and you can write it in English or in Russian.
Delivery is anonymous by default: our courier does not name the sender. That is why the card must clearly state who the flowers are from, otherwise the hosts may receive several arrangements and not know which belongs to whom. For openings with many guests, we recommend putting the company name on the first line of the card.
If the opening is also a move from an old office, the wording can mention the new address and new chapter; our article on flowers for an office opening or relocation has more examples of tone and phrasing for such cards.
Timing: when the arrangement should arrive
The best time is the morning of the opening day, before the official start. Flowers that arrive after the ribbon-cutting are still appreciated but miss the moment when guests and photographers are in the room. If the opening starts at noon, a delivery window of 09-12 is the natural choice; if you know the exact schedule, you can order delivery at an exact time with a margin of plus or minus 30 minutes.
In large cities we also offer express delivery within 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed, which helps when you learn about the opening at the last minute. For a planned event, though, we strongly suggest pre-ordering, which is possible 1 to 30 days ahead. In Saint Petersburg our delivery works around the clock, so an early-morning delivery before the office fills up is possible here.
Our courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, so give us the phone number of someone who will actually be on site, such as the office manager or reception. If nobody can take the flowers, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with your consent, leave them with the building's concierge or security desk.
Helping the arrangement last in an office
Offices are hard on flowers: warm air from heating in winter, air conditioning in summer and bright sun on reception windows. A box or basket arrangement on floral foam needs only a small glass of water poured into the foam every second day, and it will stay fresh for a week or more. Customers often ask us to add a short care note to the card, and the office manager usually appreciates it.
Place the arrangement away from radiators and direct sunlight, and not next to the coffee machine or a fruit bowl in the kitchen: warmth and ripening fruit shorten the life of cut flowers. Hydrangeas and roses in particular dry quickly in a hot room. If you send a potted orchid, it needs bright diffused light and watering roughly once a week, which makes it a good choice for an office where nobody has time for daily care.
A well-kept arrangement stays on the reception desk long after the opening, and visitors see your company's card for days. That is a quiet but effective reminder of the working relationship.
How to order from abroad with Pyat Tsvetov
Pyat Tsvetov has been working since 2011 and has three own flower shops in Saint Petersburg: on Ilyushina Street, on Obvodny Canal Embankment and on Srednerogatskaya Street. We deliver flowers across Russia ourselves. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs the operator confirms the price when confirming the order.
Choose an arrangement in our Bouquets catalogue, enter the office address, the contact person's phone number and the card text, and pay online. We accept bank cards, SBP and Yandex Pay, and foreign bank cards are accepted too, with payment processed via Robokassa. This matters for companies abroad: you can pay with a corporate card issued outside Russia.
For an opening it is worth giving the exact address with the building, entrance, floor and office number, and mentioning in the comment that this is an office opening. If you want to discuss the size, colours or timing before you pay, call us at 8 (812) 507-67-05 and a florist will help you choose. We deliver bouquets across Russia in 1–2 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Is a bouquet or an arrangement better for an office opening?
An arrangement in a box or basket is usually better. It needs no vase, stands on a desk or reception counter and lasts longer in a busy office.
Can I send red roses to a business contact in Russia?
It is better not to. Red roses carry a romantic meaning in Russia, so white, green, blue or corporate-colour arrangements are the safer choice.
When should flowers arrive for an office opening?
Ideally in the morning before the event starts. You can choose a time window such as 09-12, an exact time with a margin of plus or minus 30 minutes, or pre-order 1 to 30 days ahead.
Can I pay from abroad with a foreign corporate card?
Yes. Foreign bank cards are accepted, with payment processed via Robokassa. Bank cards, SBP and Yandex Pay are also available.
Will the hosts know the flowers are from my company?
Only if you say so on the card, because delivery is anonymous by default. Put your company name on the first line of the free card.
