Where does this come from? Making sense of a surprise bouquet

If flowers have arrived and you are wondering “where does this come from”, the bouquet alone cannot tell you who sent it or where its stems were grown. At Pyat Tsvetov (5 Flowers), delivery is anonymous by default: the courier does not name the sender. A card may explain the gift, but without an identifying message, its meaning and authorship remain uncertain.

Customers often ask us to help separate three things: who sent a bouquet, which flowers it contains and what the gesture means. Each needs a different kind of information, and appearance is rarely enough to settle all three. Pyat Tsvetov has been serving customers since 2011 and has three own flower shops in Saint Petersburg. Here is how to interpret an unexpected delivery, care for the flowers and arrange a clear, thoughtful gift for someone in Russia.

Start with the card when identifying the sender

Read any enclosed card before drawing conclusions from the bouquet’s colour or size. A nickname, a shared phrase or a reference to a recent conversation can be more informative than the flowers themselves. However, a familiar style of writing is a clue, not proof of identity. If the message does not identify its author, avoid publicly naming a suspected sender or posting a photograph that reveals someone’s address or private message.

For senders, anonymity deserves a deliberate decision, especially when ordering from another country. Our courier does not name you, so include your name in the free card if you want the recipient to recognise the gift. A simple message such as “Thinking of you from London — Anna” gives useful context without requiring a long explanation. If the surprise is intentional, consider whether an unsigned gift will feel welcome within your existing relationship.

What a flower’s appearance can actually tell you

Identifying a flower and establishing its geographical origin are separate tasks. Petal shape, leaves and the arrangement of blooms on a stem can help distinguish a rose, carnation, chrysanthemum or lily. They do not reliably establish the country in which a particular stem was grown. Treat a country-of-origin claim based only on a photograph, colour or flower size as unconfirmed, even if the variety looks familiar.

When identifying an unfamiliar stem, examine the leaves and buds as well as the open flower. Take a clear photograph in daylight, including the whole stem where possible; a close-up of petals alone can hide useful features. An identification app can suggest a name, but its result should remain provisional when several plants look alike. Until you know what the plant is, keep it away from children and pets and do not use it as food decoration.

Read flower meanings in the context of the relationship

A red rose is commonly associated with romantic love, but a bouquet is not a reliable code with one fixed translation. The occasion, the card and the relationship between sender and recipient provide stronger context than colour alone. Yellow flowers, for example, need not imply separation simply because that interpretation appears in some traditions. When sending a gift across cultures, a plain sentence about your intention prevents more confusion than an elaborate symbolic choice.

In Russian gift-giving, an odd number of flowers is customary for many celebratory bouquets, while an even number is traditionally associated with mourning. This matters most when the stems are clearly countable, such as a small bunch of roses; a mixed arrangement is less naturally read as a number. For a birthday, congratulations or a personal thank-you, state the occasion when making your choice. If the recipient has a known preference, give that more weight than a general flower-meaning guide.

Give the bouquet a clean vase and a sensible position

Once the flowers arrive, prepare a clean vase and remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Trim the stem ends with a clean, sharp tool before placing them in fresh water, handling delicate stems gently. If flower food is included, follow its dilution instructions instead of adding extra powder or improvising a stronger mixture. Check that the vase supports the bouquet comfortably and that tightly gathered stems can reach the water.

Check the water daily and refresh it regularly, cleaning the vase if it develops a film or unpleasant smell. Remove wilted material promptly and keep the arrangement away from radiators, direct sun and ripening fruit. Different flowers age at different rates, so one fading stem does not establish when the entire bouquet was made or where it came from. For a home with cats, avoid lilies: their pollen and other plant parts, as well as vase water, can pose a serious poisoning risk.

Choose a delivery time the recipient can realistically manage

For someone ordering from abroad, the practical starting point is the recipient’s availability in Russia. Compare your own time zone with the destination city before choosing a delivery time, especially around midnight or a birthday. We deliver flowers across Russia, with express delivery in large cities available in 1–2 hours after the order is confirmed. That interval starts at confirmation, so leave room for that step when planning a time-sensitive gift.

You can choose delivery at an exact time with a tolerance of plus or minus 30 minutes, or a window of 09–12, 12–15, 15–18 or 18–21. Orders can also be placed 1–30 days ahead, and delivery in Saint Petersburg is around the clock. The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, so a surprise may include a short advance call. Consult Delivery and payment when planning the order, and choose a window that fits the recipient’s day.

Order from abroad with a clear message and delivery details

Start with the Bouquets catalogue, then prepare the recipient’s name, delivery address and a telephone number where they can be reached. Include useful access details and write the card text exactly as you want the recipient to read it. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the delivery price when confirming the order. Online checkout uses CloudPayments: check the payment options displayed there, as acceptance of every foreign card is not guaranteed.

If the recipient is absent, we agree a second delivery the same day or, with the sender’s consent, hand the flowers to a neighbour or concierge. Consider in advance whether either handover would be appropriate, particularly in a shared building or workplace. For questions about your order, call 8 (812) 507-67-05. Before completing checkout, check the address, selected delivery time and card signature together: those details determine whether the gift reaches the intended person and whether they understand who it is from.

Frequently asked questions

Can the recipient find out who sent an anonymous bouquet?

Our courier does not name the sender because delivery is anonymous by default. If you want the recipient to recognise you, put your name in the free card message.

Can I tell where flowers were grown by looking at them?

Appearance can help identify a flower, but it does not reliably establish where a particular stem was grown. Colour, stem length and bloom size are insufficient evidence of geographical origin.

Can I order flowers to Russia while living abroad?

You can arrange delivery across Russia through our online checkout, which uses CloudPayments. Check the options displayed at checkout; acceptance of every foreign card is not guaranteed.

Will the courier call before delivering the flowers?

The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival. If the recipient is absent, we agree a second delivery the same day or a handover to a neighbour or concierge with the sender’s consent.

Does an unsigned bouquet have a particular romantic meaning?

An unsigned bouquet does not establish either the sender’s identity or a romantic intention. The relationship, occasion and any written message provide more useful context than the flowers alone.
