Sending Flowers as a Surprise Without the Recipient Knowing It Was You

You can send flowers as a surprise without the recipient knowing who sent them by ordering anonymous delivery, giving the courier only the recipient's name, phone and address, and writing a card without your signature. At Pyat Tsvetov delivery is anonymous by default: the courier does not name the sender, and the free card carries only the text you write.

Customers in our Saint Petersburg shops ask about anonymous bouquets more often than you might expect, and the questions are always the same: will the courier say anything, what to write on the card, what if the person is not home, and how not to give yourself away. Here are the answers, based on more than a decade of delivering flowers since 2011.

Will the courier reveal who sent the flowers

This is the first question almost everyone asks, and the answer is no. When you place an order, your contact details are used to confirm the order and payment, while the courier works only with the recipient's details. At the door the courier hands over the flowers and does not name the sender. If the recipient asks directly, the courier has nothing to tell them.

The courier does call the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival to make sure someone is there. This call is about the delivery, not the gift, and does not mention you. For a surprise, it means the recipient learns that flowers are coming only a few minutes beforehand, which most people find exciting rather than spoiling.

If the recipient is out, we agree a second delivery the same day or, only with your consent, hand the flowers to a neighbour or the concierge. In that case the neighbour also receives no information about the sender. More detail on how this works is in our article Anonymous Flower Delivery: Keep the Surprise Without the Stress.

Writing the card: anonymous but not empty

A card is free, and we recommend adding one even when you stay anonymous. Flowers with no card at all can leave the recipient wondering whether they were delivered to the wrong address. A short unsigned text such as "For no reason, just because you deserve it" or "Congratulations on the new job" makes it clear the flowers were meant for them.

Read your text as if a stranger had written it. Phrases you use every day, nicknames, private jokes and references to recent conversations can identify you as surely as a signature. Customers often add an inside joke and are then surprised to be recognised within minutes. If the goal is complete anonymity, keep the wording warm but general.

If you plan to reveal yourself later, a hint works well: an initial, a meaningful date, the name of a place you both know. Some customers send a second bouquet a week later with a signed card, turning the first anonymous one into the start of a small story. The card text is printed exactly as you write it, so check spelling and names carefully.

The address problem and other ways surprises get spoiled

The most common way an anonymous gift is uncovered is the address. If you ask the recipient's sister or a colleague where they live, that person will often guess why and may mention it. Use an address you already know, or check our guide on sending flowers without an address to understand what details the courier really needs and what can be clarified with the recipient by phone.

Timing is the second giveaway. A bouquet that arrives the day after a conversation where the recipient mentioned feeling low points to the person they spoke to. If secrecy matters, leave a few days between the conversation and the delivery, or choose an occasion that many people know about, such as a birthday or a professional holiday.

The third is your usual style. Friends and loved ones remember what you have given before. If you always choose peonies or white tulips, pick something else for the anonymous bouquet: a mixed seasonal composition, a hat box with roses or a basket with chrysanthemums.

Which flowers to choose for a secret gift

For a friendly surprise, choose bright mixed compositions with spray roses, gerberas, alstroemeria or chrysanthemums. They carry no romantic message, so a colleague or friend can enjoy them without wondering about hidden intentions. For a romantic surprise, roses remain the clearest choice, with red for passion and pink or cream for tenderness.

A box arrangement is a practical option for anonymous gifts. It does not need a vase, stands on a desk or table immediately and survives the courier's journey well. For someone who may not have a vase at hand, this saves them an awkward search for a jar. Small bouquets for Russia are traditionally made with an odd number of stems, as even numbers are associated with funerals.

Avoid very strong scents if you do not know the recipient's preferences well, and avoid overly large compositions for a first anonymous gesture. A modest, well-composed bouquet feels pleasant and intriguing; an enormous one from an unknown sender can make some people uncomfortable.

When it is better to sign your name

Anonymous flowers work best when the mystery adds pleasure: a birthday surprise from friends, a thank-you after a concert, a romantic gesture to someone who will be glad of it. In other situations a signature is kinder. A person who has recently ended a relationship, someone who has been receiving unwanted attention, or a recipient whose husband or wife may misread the gift can feel anxious rather than happy when flowers arrive from nobody.

Business gifts are another case where we advise customers to sign. A client, a manager or a supplier expects to know who is thanking them, and an unsigned bouquet in an office can lead to awkward guessing among colleagues. If you want a surprise for someone in Russia but still want them to know it is from you, our article Ordering Flowers for Someone in Russia Without Telling Them explains how to keep the delivery itself unexpected while signing the card.

Placing an anonymous order from abroad

Choose a bouquet or arrangement in our catalogue, give the recipient's name, phone and address, and write the card text without a signature. Payment is online by bank card, SBP or Yandex Pay; foreign bank cards are accepted through Robokassa, so customers in other countries can pay directly. City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs the operator confirms the price when confirming the order.

In large cities, express delivery takes 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed. You can also choose an exact time with a margin of plus or minus 30 minutes, a window of 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21, or pre-order 1 to 30 days ahead. In Saint Petersburg delivery is around the clock, which is useful for a surprise timed to the very start of a birthday or to an early morning before work.
