Sending Roses Anonymously: Answers From a Saint Petersburg Flower Shop

You can send roses anonymously by ordering a bouquet for delivery and simply not putting your name on the card. At Pyat Tsvetov anonymity is the default for every order: our courier hands over the roses without naming the sender, and the free card carries exactly the text you write, signed or not.

We have run flower shops in Saint Petersburg since 2011, and "Will she know it was me?" is one of the questions we hear most often at the counter and on the phone. The sections below collect what we usually explain: what happens at the door, how customers accidentally give themselves away, which roses fit a secret gesture, and how to order from abroad with a foreign card.

What the recipient actually sees

The recipient sees a courier with a bouquet and, if you added one, a card. That is all. The courier does not say who placed the order and does not hint at it. About 15 minutes before arriving, the courier phones the recipient to check that someone will be at home; the call is about the delivery itself and the sender is not mentioned during it either. Customers sometimes ask whether they need to request anonymity separately - they do not, because this is simply how every one of our deliveries works.

If the recipient is not home, we agree a second delivery the same day, or leave the roses with a neighbour or concierge. We do the second option only with your consent, because a neighbour asking questions can spoil a carefully planned secret. Tell us in advance which option you prefer, and the courier will follow it.

The mistakes that reveal the sender

In our experience the sender is almost never revealed by the delivery, but quite often by the card. Initials, a pet name, a phrase from your last conversation or a reference to a city you visited together all point straight at you. If you want to stay unknown, write something that anyone who admires the recipient could write: "For your birthday, with warm wishes", "Because today needed some roses" or "From someone who thinks you are wonderful".

Timing is the second giveaway. Roses arriving on the evening you had dinner together, or the morning after an argument, need no signature. Pre-ordering is useful here: you can book delivery 1 to 30 days ahead and let the date stand on its own. The third giveaway is the bouquet itself - if you always bring her white tulips, a bouquet of white tulips is as good as a signed card, which is a good reason to choose roses this time.

There is also the question of who will see the delivery. At work, colleagues notice and talk. At a family home, parents may answer the door. Choose the address and time window - 09-12, 12-15, 15-18 or 18-21 - with that in mind. Our guide on sending surprise flowers without the recipient knowing the sender goes through more of these situations.

Which roses suit an anonymous gift

The colour has to say what your name cannot. Red roses read as love, and from an unknown sender they say "secret admirer" very clearly; that is right if you plan to reveal yourself, and too much if you only want to cheer up a friend. Pink roses express admiration and gentleness, white roses respect and sincerity, cream and peach roses warmth without romance. For a colleague, a teacher or a relative, we usually suggest pink or cream roses, sometimes with a little greenery so the bouquet looks generous but not dramatic.

In Russia the number of stems matters as much as the colour. For any joyful occasion the count is odd - 3, 5, 7, 15, 25 - because even numbers are brought to funerals. A small bouquet of five or seven roses is a discreet, elegant surprise; 25 or more roses is a statement that will be discussed by everyone who sees it. If you are torn between roses and something softer, our comparison of roses and peonies for a Russian woman may help.

Writing a card without a signature

The card is free, and we always recommend using it even when you stay anonymous. A bouquet with no card at all can be confusing: the recipient may think it was delivered to the wrong flat or worry about who is behind it. One or two kind sentences remove that worry and set the tone of the gift. Write in Russian if the recipient reads only Russian; a short English line is also fine and often adds to the intrigue.

Keep the message warm and light. Wishes, compliments and gratitude work well: "Thank you for everything you do", "Happy birthday to the kindest person I know", "Just to make you smile". Avoid lines that sound like surveillance or pressure, such as "I see you every day" or "You cannot hide from me" - without a name, those read as threatening rather than romantic. If you are not sure how a phrase will sound, call us on 8 (812) 507-67-05 and we will help with the wording.

When anonymous roses are the right idea

From what customers tell us, the anonymous bouquets that are remembered most fondly are sent between people who know each other well: a grown-up son sending roses to his mother "from a secret admirer" on an ordinary Tuesday, friends cheering up a colleague after a difficult month, a partner starting an anniversary with a mystery delivery before the real present in the evening. The recipient enjoys guessing, and the reveal is part of the gift.

An anonymous bouquet is a poor idea when the recipient has asked not to be contacted, or after a breakup. An unsigned bouquet is still a message, and in those situations it causes anxiety, not pleasure. If you plan to reveal yourself, it is kind to do so within a few days.

Some customers plan the reveal in two steps: an unsigned bouquet in the morning, then a second, signed delivery or a phone call in the evening. This works especially well for anniversaries and birthdays, because the recipient spends the day guessing and the evening laughing about it. If you want two deliveries, you can book both at once with different time windows.

Ordering anonymous roses to Russia from abroad

Choose a bouquet in the bouquets catalogue, enter the recipient's name, phone and address, write the card text and pay online. We accept bank cards including foreign ones (payment goes through Robokassa), as well as SBP and Yandex Pay, so you can order from any country. We deliver across Russia: city delivery costs 500 RUB, and for suburbs and remote districts the operator confirms the price when confirming the order.

In large cities express delivery takes 1-2 hours after the order is confirmed, or you can choose an exact time with an accuracy of plus or minus 30 minutes. In Saint Petersburg, where our three shops are - on Ilyushina Street, Obvodny Canal Embankment and Srednerogatskaya Street - we deliver around the clock, which makes a midnight surprise possible. Details are on the delivery and payment page, and any question can be settled by phone at 8 (812) 507-67-05.

Frequently asked questions

Does the courier tell the recipient who sent the roses?

No. Our couriers never name the sender, and this applies to every order by default. The recipient only sees the bouquet and the card text you wrote.

Can I pay for an anonymous order with a foreign card?

Yes, foreign bank cards are accepted through Robokassa. You can also pay by SBP or Yandex Pay.

Can anonymous roses be delivered at night?

In Saint Petersburg we deliver around the clock, so a late-evening or midnight delivery is possible there. In other cities choose an exact time or one of the daytime windows.

How many roses should an anonymous bouquet have?

Any odd number for a happy occasion. Five or seven roses make a discreet surprise, while 25 or more is a bold statement.
