Are you sure? Making a thoughtful flower choice

“Are you sure?” means asking someone to confirm that they feel confident about a choice or statement. If you are asking it before sending flowers, base your decision on the recipient’s preferences, the occasion and the delivery arrangements; a bouquet does not need a hidden meaning to be appropriate. When something important is unknown, such as whether the person welcomes flowers at work, check that detail before ordering.

Customers often ask us whether a bouquet feels too romantic, whether a colour is suitable or whether flowers can reach someone while the sender is abroad. At Pyat Tsvetov (5 Flowers), we have been helping customers choose flowers in Saint Petersburg since 2011, and we have three own flower shops in the city. Our advice starts with what the recipient will enjoy and how the gift will fit into their day. The steps below turn that broad uncertainty into a few practical decisions.

Start with the person and the purpose

Before choosing flowers, describe the occasion in one plain sentence: a birthday, a thank-you, an anniversary or a wish to stay in touch. Then consider the relationship and the recipient’s taste, including any flowers or colours they have mentioned liking. A favourite flower is usually a more useful guide than a list of symbolic meanings found online. If you have no preference to work with, choose a bouquet whose overall appearance suits the message you want to send.

Think about where the flowers will go after delivery. Someone receiving a gift at an office may need to carry it home, while a person with limited table space may find an oversized arrangement awkward. Strong fragrance also deserves thought, particularly in a shared room or if the recipient is sensitive to scent. Use the Bouquets catalogue to compare the appearance of the options, and check any practical detail that the description leaves unclear before placing your order.

Read flower meanings as context, not a fixed code

Flower colours carry associations, but they do not communicate an identical message to every recipient. Red roses often suggest romance, so they deserve particular thought when the relationship is professional or newly formed. A mixed bouquet can suit a friendly celebration without putting the emphasis on one familiar romantic symbol. Personal taste still matters: if someone loves red roses, their preference may be more relevant than a general etiquette rule.

In Russian flower etiquette, an odd number is customary for a celebratory gift when the stems are clearly counted; even numbers are traditionally associated with mourning. This is especially useful to remember when choosing a simple bouquet of one flower type. With a mixed arrangement, do not assume that the number of visible blooms tells you how many stems it contains. If the count matters to your recipient, clarify it before ordering rather than trying to calculate it from a photograph.

Make the card clear and consider anonymity

A short card can explain the occasion more clearly than the bouquet itself. For a birthday, name the celebration and add one personal wish; for thanks, mention the specific kindness you appreciated. When sending sympathy flowers, keep the wording gentle and avoid asking the recipient to reply. Read the message once from their perspective, especially if you are writing in a language that one of you uses less often.

Our delivery is anonymous by default: the courier does not name the sender, and a card with your text is free. If you want the recipient to know who sent the flowers, put your name in that text rather than relying on the courier to explain. Anonymous flowers can leave someone uncertain about the intention, particularly in a new relationship or after a disagreement. Consider whether withholding your name will feel pleasant to this particular person before choosing that approach.

For an apology, acknowledge what happened without using the flowers to ask for forgiveness on a deadline. A card such as “I am sorry I missed your celebration. I was thinking of you and wanted to send my wishes” explains the gesture without demanding a response. If someone has asked for no contact, respect that boundary instead of sending a surprise. Thoughtful etiquette includes deciding whether a gift is welcome at all.

Choose delivery timing around the recipient’s day

Start with the recipient’s likely whereabouts, then choose the delivery timing. We deliver flowers across Russia, and express delivery in large cities is available within 1–2 hours after the order is confirmed. Other timing options include an exact time with a tolerance of plus or minus 30 minutes, or the windows 09–12, 12–15, 15–18 and 18–21. You can also pre-order 1–30 days ahead, which gives you a way to arrange a future occasion.

In Saint Petersburg, delivery is available around the clock. When ordering from another country, compare the recipient’s local date and time with your own so that an evening order does not lead to an unintended arrival time. Choose a window when the recipient can reasonably receive the flowers, especially for a workplace address. The Delivery and payment page is a useful reference when deciding which arrangement fits the occasion.

The courier calls the recipient about 15 minutes before arrival, so plan for a delivery notification rather than a completely unannounced doorstep surprise. If the recipient is absent, we agree a second delivery the same day or handing the flowers to a neighbour or concierge with the sender’s consent. Do not assume that a reception desk or neighbour will automatically accept the bouquet. A suitable address and reachable recipient help make the handover straightforward.

Check the order details when sending from abroad

Have the recipient’s name, delivery address and contact number ready before you start checkout. Check the city carefully, particularly if you are copying a transliterated address, and include the building or flat details needed to identify the destination. Review the card text separately from the delivery information so your intended signature is included. If you are ordering for a date that differs from today where the recipient lives, check the selected date once more before paying.

City delivery costs 500 RUB; for remote districts and suburbs, the operator confirms the delivery price when confirming the order. Online checkout uses CloudPayments, and you should check the payment options displayed there before proceeding. Acceptance of every foreign-issued card cannot be assumed, so use the checkout information to assess the options available to you. For questions about an order or delivery arrangements, call 8 (812) 507-67-05.

Help the recipient enjoy the flowers after arrival

For cut flowers intended for a vase, start with a clean vase and fresh water. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline, then trim the stem ends with a clean, sharp tool before arranging them. If flower food is supplied, follow the packet’s dilution instructions rather than adding an estimated amount. Flowers arranged in a water-holding base need different handling, so follow any care instructions provided instead of pulling the stems out to recut them.

Keep a vase bouquet away from direct sunlight, heaters and ripening fruit, and check the water level daily. Refresh the water regularly, rinse the vase when needed and remove fading flowers or submerged plant material. Different flowers age at different rates, so judge care needs by the condition of individual stems rather than expecting every bloom to change together. When sending to someone who rarely receives flowers, a brief care note in your own message can be a useful addition to the greeting.
